Well, not much to report from the digicam.... [IMG] I did catch the "local" from Apex/South Durham coming up and crossing the NS line today in Durham with these prize units on the point:

I caught a whole lot more NS action.... [IMG]

CVhessie bought several brand new in the early 80's

I am not 100% sure of this one [IMG] The original road # may be B&O 4136, as they renumbered the GP40-2's that were originally CS 4100-4261 into CSX 6001-6262. I am pretty sure CSX 6000 was a rebuilt GP40 that was originally numbered in the GP40 ranks, but later changed. I'll need to do some more research om this topic.

Actually, # 6348 may be an ex-SBD or SCL unit. I need to research that too. [IMG] CSX has gone back and added/changed the battery box covers to the "Chessie slots" that you see in the photo. I am sure I have some pics in my archives (shoebox) that I can refer to.

Silly me... [IMG] The unit in question is actually CSX 6346, which I believe to be SBD 1636.... I still need to do some research on the unit to find out its origin, but it appears NOT to be a Chessie System unit.

Chessie, I am noticed my possible mistake too. (Stupid me) I am also diging up the history of the unit. Origanally when I was doing resurch on my Builder Plate I found in a friends actic (Later found to have come off of B&O 4185) I found that this units number today in CSX 6084. So I was lead to beleve that Chessie 4100-4427 (all Chessie GP40-2) were numbered one lower on CSX This would lead to the number series being 5999-6326. This didn't sound right to me so I am left resurching websites.

Now I went to the CSX photo archives and looked at some stuff. I noticed that a huge chunk of the Chessie GP40-2 have been renumbered. And that there numbers came close to the unit in question. It seems that just below is all the Chessie units and just above is all the Seaboard units. Why cant someone come out with a roster that has the history of the unit online?

Actually, I have checked several sources, and the Chessie units were numbered one higher in the CSX block numbering, leaving room for # 6000 (picture forthcoming this weekend, with any luck ;)

CSX did something weird with their GP40-2 fleet ... if you remeber, a lot of GP40-2's were configured/rebuilt as slug "parents"; this caused a great problem in the numbering system.

I think the variance is due to retired units. This info is from the Diesel Spotter's Guide 3rd edition:

    CSX 6001-6063 = B&O 4100-4162
    CSX 6064-6083 = C&O 4165-4184
    CSX 6084-6155 = B&O 4185-4256
    CSX 6156-6160 = WM 4257-4261

    Don't ask me what happened to CS # 4163 & 4164 :(
