In my travels today, I managed to snag a couple of interesting photographs, this being one: [IMG]

It has the typical Chessie System battery box slotted cover, but if you look closely at the picture, you can see it is still sub-lettered B&O!

This unit was actually on the NS when photographed!

Here's the second unit of the consist... a GE "Super 7"! [IMG]

This unit had no owner lettering or sub-lettering.... can you tell this one was at the entrance to the NS yard too?

Does anyone know if these are GECX locos?

Thanks for the confirmation. Someone from the NS forum pointed out that Diesel Era had an article about the "Super 7" series in the Jan/Feb 99 issue. I looked it up and there was # 3002 as the first loco picture of the story (although it looked a little "fresher" than my picture [IMG] )

In the article it said they did carry GECX reporting marks.... in fact, pictures of other locos in the 3000 series had the road # on the cab and large stylized GECX lettering in place of the #'s on the long hood.

Nope, this is an ex Monanghela Railroad unit. The Mon was owned by CR at the time of the CSX/NS purchase and this unit had not bee repainted into CR colors yet.

These two units are off the Winston Salem Southbound Railways Freight F701. This train operates from Winston Salem to Wadesboro and Hamlet. It operates on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday leaving in the wee morning hours and returning in the wee morning hours.
The WSSB is jointly owned by NS and CSX using motive power supplied by NS and CSX.

The GE unit is a GECX unit even though it don`t have the lettering. It is plainly not an ex Monongahela unit as previously posted because the Monongahela units were Four Axle
    units.

(tabby cat looks very closely at picture and questions)

This is not a ex monanghela unit for it is a 6-axle unit (look at the trucks closely) Monanghela only owned B23-7S (4 axle super-7)that conrail later rebuilt into B30-7R (basically swaped out the 12 Cyl 2250HP Prime Mover with a 12 Cyl 3000HP Prime mover that is simular to the ones in the C30-7A) So this is not a ex Mon unit.

Using my GE spoting skills I can see this unit has a 16cyl Prime mover (there are 2 sets of 4 engine access doors) so that further rules out it being a ex Mon unit.

Now comes the big question "What the H*** is this unit?"

    Good Catch Chessie!

The unit pictured, GECX 3002 is a re-manufactured unit, dubbed the C30-S7R,[ C (axle) 30(00 hp) -Super 7 Remanufactired)
a prototype that GE hoped to capitalize on. (Interestingly enough, according to an article in Diesel Era, the first 3 units, #3000-3002 were actually rebuilt by Morrison-Knudsen) I will have to do additional research on the origin of this unit, but the article did say that the first 3 units selected for rebuild were 2 ex-Southern (high nose) U33C's and a UP U30C.

One more thing about the WSSB Road Freight. It usually gets to Wadesboro between 8am and 10am so it can be a preatty good train to chase from Albemarle south especially in the longer datelight hours of Spring and Summer. A CSX crews picks up the train at Wadesboro and takes it to Hamlet, turns the engines and picks up the return Train for Winston. The return train usually gets to Wadesboro between 3pm and 5pm and leaves between 9pm and Midnight.
