As I said initially, I caught the newest NS units today (SD70M-2's) and the oldest (SD9M's)...
    Here is NS # 50:

A few minutes later, # 55 comes in on a train led by two SD70M-2's!

Isn't anyone curious as to why we have SD9's running almost 50 years after they were built???

NS rebuilt them with 645 power assemblies for use as yard/transfer power from 1989 to 1995...

Very nice seeing classic first generation power, still hard at work.

So internally, the SD9m is the same as an SD40-2? I know the SD40-2's had 645s, as well as SD50s (although different and troublesome design).

They use 645 power assemblies in the 567 crankcase... they are more akin to SD38s than anything else (well, maybe a SD28)

    HH,

50/53 look to have a recent paint job, but in the traditional NS scheme, sans horsehead!

i wonder if the logo is an big ole' decal or a paint job.

if it's a decal (BTW i have an old tp&w "decal" with teepee willie on the 4' diamond.. used for boxcars years ago) then perhaps NS is using up the balance of the non-horsehead on heritage equipment?? just a thought

excellent shots BTW.. wish these units would travel the rails to the midwest sometime!!

The SD9Ms were cycled through Juniata for overhaul in 2002/2003... some were repainted then (the Horsehead scheme was not yet standard then)

Some units have simply had the reflective frame stripe added to them (a la 55)

NS did repaint a lot of units after the HH scheme was introduced and they did use up their supply of old decals...

Good to see the heritage units still hard at work - and look at the shine on #53! [IMG]
