In a true 'switching' yard the ideal configuration of the tracks if for them to form a slight bowl - the mid point of the tracks is slightly lower than are the ends of the tracks. Thus free rolling cars will tend to roll to the lowest point on the track and not run out the far end. Of course if you kick a car hard enough you can overcome the bowl effect with the resulting consequences of a derailment, sideswipe or a runaway.
