Have a vacation coming up in July and Canada is my destination. Does Toronto still have a streetcar operation? If so what type of equipment is used? The last time I was there was in 1969 as a 9 year old and remember riding PCC's. Thanks

They were still running streetcars in 1985 when we were over there, and I am sure they still are. I seem to remember seeing some on a holiday programme about Toronto on TV here a few months ago.

Yes, Toronto uses Red, white and black street cars, if you live with in the broadcast zone of "Much Music" (Canada's MTV) you can see them zoom by in the background while the VJ is talking on about the next video. The cars are opertaed by Toronto Transit Commision on 4' 10 7/8" track. There are 251 street cars in Toronto, with one stored unservicable (it is an old Small Witt car retained for Historical Purposes - #2766) Toronto also a Subway that rosters over 700 cars!

    Happy Railroading!

Yes, and very clean and efficient it was too, when we were there in '85. Hope it is still as good [IMG]

As I post this, several (100+) new subway cars are being built for Toronto. 74 of them were delivered last month according to Branchline- Canada's Rail News Source :D

Happy Railroading, and TAKE A TRAIN!

Was in Toronto in '99 for a few days and boy was I surprised to see real, live, running streetcars! I actually thought I was seeing things when I was in a cab going to my hotel from Union Station when I saw a something glide past me a few blocks away (It was late, and I was tired).

The next day I saw them up close and personal... and I also had a ride on the subway. The subway was very clean and efficent. I don't know why, but that subway made me think of some sci-fi movie/book (especially that logo). But that last part is just me [IMG] .

Toronto is a great city, I wish I could have spent more then a [short] day there!

The Subway has only had one "wreck" ever, and considering that they have run for so long, and they amount of trains they run that isn't that bad, of course none would be alot better ;) Also, I just remembered that GO Transit runs out there, are you going to try and get on one of their commuter trains? They are the largest commuter train operater in Canada I believe, they roster more cars than Via Rail Canada!

    Happy Railroading!
