    Hi Herb.

Where in Australia are you thinking of visiting, when, and for how long? It's a very large place and takes a time to get around.

Have a look at the following -

    The Indian Pacific trans-continental train - http://www.gsr.com.au/theindianpacific/

Since you will be flying in from Honolulu, you will probably be coming into Sydney. Have a look at the following sites -

Tourism New South Wales - http://www.tourism.nsw.gov.au/

Whilst here you may travel south to Victoria and it's capitol, Melbourne. Tourism Victoria's site - http://www.tourism.vic.gov.au/

To travel between Sydney and Melbourne by train, check CountryLink's site - http://www.countrylink.nsw.gov.au/

Hope this gives you a starting point.

    Gary.

Thank you Gary! More from you than trying a net search. Almost moved to Au in the early 60's when your gummint thought I had some talent (unknown to me) and would move me, wife, 5 kids and give me a job. Procrastinated too long-was a huge move and a little scary.

Always fascinated with your land. Did a lot of motorcycle desert riding in CA & figgered I could ruin a bike in one ride down there.

Can't answer you questions yet. I'm retired so time doesn't matter. It's the money.

Do you mind if I quiz you again? At another address?

    Aloha-Herb

I can relate to the 'scary' move - I was offered a transfer from Chicago to Sydney - the catch was I was needed in Sydney in 6 weeks! I had never been to Oz before (nor had my wife) but we figured what the heck - it was meant to be a 1 year assignment and, well four years later we have applied for Permanent Residency. It don’t suck down here at all. :D

Here are two links of tourist steam in Sydney - both are highly recommended:

It's also known as the land that TIME forgot! :D

Herb, nug (and MRL Mick) is in a nice part of the country, Queensland, and has pointed out one of the biggest advantages from anyone travelling from the US to OZ - the dollar!

Rob (yankinoz) and I both ride bikes, though I don't know if I'd tackle the deserts... hehe.
Along with Colonel (Paul) we are located in Sydney.

By all means, Herb, contact me, or any of the others, if you have any questions. We will endeavour to assist as we can. You can contact me outside of the site use my trainboard address (in the signature below) or audiosat@pnc.com.au,if you prefer.

    Gary.
You'll never never know if you never never go!

    Gary,
You may be able to give Herb the site for the train that runs from Sydney to Cairns.
They say it is a very good trip.

I have seen some recent ads on Brisbane TV mentioning a tourist overnight train from Gold Coast to Lismore via Byron Bay. Byron Bay is the most Easterly Point in Oz. This train goes through the best part of Australia, the NSW North Coast.

I have not been able to track it down with a link, but I believe it is called Ritz Rail, or something Similiar.

If someone finds it drop me a line, I looks great.

Nug, I know the train you are referring. It's The Great South Pacific Express. I've seen it a few times running through the suburbs here in Sydney - a sort of Aussie Orient Express. This is one seriously luxurious train!
I also found this - http://www.around-the-world.com/Australia/Packages/ozrail1a.htm - an alternative routing.

Herb, check this site as well - http://www.anzac.com/aust/aust.htm
It has a bit of everything.

Mick, try Ritz Rail run by Northern Rivers Railway (possible dud link).

    Gary.

    Herb,
It looks as though the aussie contingent of trainboard has everything covered.

Three rail trip well worthwhile would have to be from Perth to Sydney or vice versa on the Indian Pacific, the trip from Sydney to Alice Springs (Outback) on the Ghan or as Gary and Doug mention on the Aussie version of the Orient Express which goes from Sydney to Cairns.

Good luck in your travel plans and keep us informed on your progress.
