I second the vote for the Glendale Pub, in Glendale,OH ( north of Cincinatti.)
Great food and great atmosphere on the patio, well at least when it is warm. I sat there for about 90 minutes and saw at least 10 trains back in September.

Deerfield, Il on the North Side of Chicago is TRAX Grill. It is right next to the Metra station on the Milwaukee North District, from the patio on the roof you can watch, Metra, Amtrak Hiawatha's an Empire Builders and CP freights. When I was there for lunch the CP frieght I saw had an all Soo lash up. Great Trainwatching, food B-.

I maintain that someone could probably make a fortune off starving crews with a snack wagon, a cell phone, a scanner and a little knowlege of hold-out points. There's been a lot of nights out in the boonies when that year-old bag of pretzel crumbs in the bottom of the grip started to look pretty good by the time the light turned green.

Some of these I've patronized, were dangerous territory. :eek:mg: Known as maggot wagons, up-chuck wagons, etc. :(

My wife is getting ready to serve up fresh baked apple pie!

There was a small Mom-n-Pop grocery/deli next to the then-L&N tracks on the west side of Gulfport back 25-30 years ago. As I was driving along Railroad St., one of the head-end crew of a stopped north-bound four-engined freight was walking back to the lead engine with a very large paper sack on one arm and a case of Cokes on the other. I might add the freight stretched back 1-1/2 miles, blocking most of the crossings in west Gulfport....:embarassed: :teeth:

Dang! I was right at the eatery at Devore on Saturday. Joe's, I think it's called. Had I known this topic would come up, I would have taken a picture! :D Nice place to sit and watch all three lines before they split apart for their ascent up Cajon Pass!

As it turned out, a BNSF container train just sat there, waiting for me. As soon as I finished snapping away, the engineer fired up, rang the bell and pulled away! :)

Will post a few pics after MNF tonight.

I dont know if anybody mention this one yet, but my favorite is CN tower in Toronto. You get a birds eye view of all the tracks going into the train station while the restaurant is turning 360 degrees.

Before Watco took over here, BNSF/BN crews used to get sandwiches, etc, at a specific Conoco here in town. There were times when they'd even get a pizza. From an eatery about 15 blocks further east.

In Gallup, NM, the BNSF main and old US66 (the main drag) run close together. On the east side, there are a couple of eateries that allow for dining & trainwatching, among which are the Denny's at the I-40 interchange, and a burger joint (it's a franchise chain in new Mexico, great burgers too) with seats up front. ALso, the Sonics at either end of town allow for great trainwatching if you're parked in the right place.

There are some places in Saginaw, TX along US287 across the street from the BNSF main, but at this time I can't remember them. Perhaps someone from the Metroplex knows the names.

Lefty Frizell never had the good fortune to be in Saginaw, TX..... :D :D .............altho I like his version much better. It's played on KHYI-FM (93.3, The Range) from time to time. Sadly, not on any of the NashVegas crapcountry stations.

    Dear Boxcab,

I was at the diamond in Marion a few years ago, even went up into the old crossing tower. Yes, there is an ABANDONED (Hello China!) Bucyrus Bucket/Shovel plant right across the street from the depot and diamond. Marion even has a bucket and historical marker nearby. Bucyrus made the big coal field and massive construction buckets and dredges. Que Edith and Archie....

Here in Mentor, Ohio there is a CSX signal at Reynolds Road (Rt 306).
There is a Ponderosa Steakhouse and a Chipotle Grill that we have seen many a crew scramble over to while holding for reds. Neither are good railfanning resturants however due to lack of trackside windows. About a mile further east there is a happening night club positioned between the NS and CSX mains. There are windows toward the CSX main.
The best potential in the area is a resturant under construction within the old New York Central Mentor train station building.
The folks who are working on it are trying to bring back the train station look to the property after several attempts by others at sports bars and the like. The progerss is going slowly as they seem to be working without any help from contractors. They claim that the cuisine will be european with a lean toward German. I would say it will be at least spring of 07 before they open.

Hemmingway's on the square in Marrietta, GA. Sit outside, facing away from the street. In an hour you'll get 3-6 CSX freights on the Main that runs through town. Food is pretty good too.

    More good eats!

    Also in Cheyenne:
Crossroads Cafe, a great truck-stop diner style atmosphere, big portions, great prices, freindly service.

Little Philly, a great place for french fries *with Malt vinegar, of course!*, cheesesteaks, Gyros, and pierogis

    In Montana:
Applebees in Great Falls has nice overlook of the Mighty Missouri river, and of course the former GN engine shops and river crossing.

Avon Cafe, in Avon, MT; overlooks the Mullan Pass mainline just east of Garrison, MT. Great 'Blue Ribbon Porkie' pork chop sammich, and fantastic fresh-cut fries!!
