I heard Norfolk Southern had a bad wreck with many fatalities from chlorine gas leaking from tank cars. Anyone have any details?
I heard the very end of this mentioned on radio. But didn't catch which RR, or where. So it was NS? Sounded really bad! Boxcab E50
Similar deal in San Antonio on the UP. Remember that Rus? It was last summer. Two big clorine tankers on the ground. Two or three dead. Closed one of the south bound lines for three days. Some UP managers got fired for that one. I think it occurred around 5 am and the drive to work traffic got involved. There are some very caustic things being shipped by rail. Sent from NSW library, Sydney.
Looks like the moving freight hit a parked train on the siding? Car or loco pick a switch? Sabotage (cut switch lock, throw and run like heck)?
That is ugly. I hope they'll spend their energies on helping those in need. And save the finger pointing politics for later! Boxcab E50
Oh yes, I remember well. Every time there is a chlorine desaster I flash back to May 11, 1976 right here in Houston when a tank truck fell of the ramp at 610 and 59. I was in the resulting traffic jam and got to whiff enough to make me sick.
8 dead, 240 injured, 5,400 people evacuated. A train crashed into a parked train at a textile plant in Graniteville, SC. The engineer was killed in the crash. The NTSB has been unable to reach the site due to the chlorine gas. Historical note: chlorine gas was used in the first World War, along with mustard gas. It has a tendency to lie in close to the ground and in hollows, making it very deadly against trenches that were used extensively in that war.
Well, another factory worker was found dead. They're still cleaning up the spill. A full investigation won't get underway until they clean up the clorine first. Apparently NS is footing the hotel bill for evacuees.
I would hope they're footing the bill for the evacuees. If not, they'd certainly only be making unhappy people very angry. How do they "clean up" the chlorine? Boxcab E50
40 tons of lime on the ground will soak up the chlorine. The NS is putting the evacuees up in motels and giving them cupons for food and stuff like that.
Sounds like they'll probably be buying some adjacent property, homes, businesses, and more. This is going to be a time, and money consuming job. Boxcab E50
