What color and kind of striping would best fit the transition era (c. 1947-1955) for small-town streets and rural roads in the northwest U.S.? White...yellow....single or double solid lines...dotted lines? Thanks!
Depends on the location...…..basic lines haven't changed. So go for a drive and copy what you see. I believe some of the distances have changed, but not the types.
I'm not sure about Montana. Originally, most states just had a single white center stripe. Expressways, which were still rare, are where the modern system was developed. That means yellow center stripes, white between lanes going the same direction and solid white on the right, dashed where changing lanes is legal and solid where it isn't. Eventually all highways were switched over, but it took a couple of decades.
Most states have a highways website now. I found all my striping info by Googling. States offer this info for historians and modelers.
