You got it right Ken! Don't know why they were there but they were. The original building is in bad shape, I belive it's empty now, if it isn't it should be. The real place isn't that close to the tunnel portal but I had to compress. It probably is 1/8 of a mile away, right in town.
It's not that easy for me either, choseing what to put in and what to leave out. I had to pick that building out of about a group of four, I look for the most eye catching one out of the bunch.
Well guy's, It's been a little over two months since my last post on the subject so I thought I would update. This is Tunnel City as of May 15, 2006. Sorry but I am still taking fuzzy pic's. I have the Milw. station about 1/4 done and still have to do the C&NW one. after that all the ground cover and fine details.
Here is a pic of the Tunnel City station finished. It is all scratchbuilt except for the windows which are from Tichy.
Nice! I've never seen a photo that showed it so clearly. Now I know how that depot looked. I can't think of another on their system of like design. Very unique! Boxcab E50
Ken, I first seen the station in an article in Milwaukee Railroader magazine, they had a black and white picture of it.I bought some slides of it from John at Depots by John along with the C&NW station. When they arrived he sent along a set of plans for both stations put out by both railroads. They had the sizes, colors and even the materials they were built from. So it made my job a whole lot easier! I finished the C&NW station also I will dig up a picture of it and post it. From what I gather the station was brought down from northern Wisconsin when the original station burned down. The plans said this station plan was developed in the 1930's and is the smaller of two variations. If you would like to have a copy of the plan I would be glad to mail one to you.
A tunnel in WI? Wait, TWIN tunnels?? Neat modeling! Have any proto photos of TC, WI? Kinda like Garrison, MT: (showing the MILW tunnel, of course, next to the ex-NP (MRL) tunnel)
Hemi, The only pic's of the tunnels in Tunnel City I have are in the Milwaukee Railroader magazine and I don't think they would like me to post them. In the present time there is only one tunnel left, the C&NW tunnel caved in in the 1970's. So they rented the Milwaukee tunnel, and the UP rents it from the CP in the present.they have both entrances to the tunnels fenced in so you can't get near enough to them to get pictures. The Tunnel City tunnel is the only Milw. tunnel east of the Mississippi River and the first or the last between Chicago and the west coast.
Andy- I probably won't need plans for the station. But thanks for the offer! Am really looking forward to seeing it installed on your layout! Boxcab E50
Thanks to this thread spent the day in Tunnel city today. 4 hours 6 trains, not bad. I was able to park and walk to the ledge above the tracks and see entrance to the current tunnel. Where are the collapsed ones in relation??? Does anyone know the history of the huge abandoned fly over, a couple of miles west of tunnel city? It is south of 21, where the CP Mainline splices through Ft McCoy. Brad
Charger, You were luckier than me, last time I tried to get up there I was visited by two Wis. state troopers. If you were on the tunnel city side looking at the tunnel the C&NW tunnel would be to your right maybe 1/8 of a mile. It is overgrown alot so you have to dig in the under brush to see it. As far as the track I can't recall seeing any. About the tracks inside Fort Mc Coy you would be able to find out more inside the base. They don't share to much info with us on the outside. I know at one time the Milw. and C&NW went into the base but my knowledge stops at the gate!!
Hey Charger, If you were on the Tunnel City side of the hill maybe you saw this. It might not be perfect but it was the best I could do in HO!
