    i was wondering how the turbiliners operate in the electrified sections into new york city . can they operate south of ny if desired ? are there any plans to extend the electrification to albany ?

    The turbos have a third rail package that is lowered to the diameter of the third rail also known as pick up shoes, these are positioned to pick up electrical current from the third rail

    Each Turbo power car has a single DC traction motor capable of moving the train inside the tunnel areas of Penn Station. The DC system is only intended for short term operation. The turbine operates via a hydraulic transmission. The turbo trains can operate anywhere and have been in service at various locations outside of the Empire corridor. All current turbo equipment is financed by New York State so I doubt they will ever be used outside of the NY operations.
    No plans to extend electric system to Albany that I have heard of. MetroNorth service expansion above Poughkeepsie has recently been shot down.
