Uuuummm, yes, Route66 already pointed that one out. The video was actually from Trains on Tracks which is on PBS.
Battery power is really the only way. They had to make up close to 100 sections of trains each one pulled by two diesels, so close to 200 engines - even if each engine took only 2 amps to run, that would be around 400 amps total track power required if one ran them with DC or DCC.
I never took the time to figure that out, but wow 400 amps??? We better call up Caterpillar and tell them we will need to rent one of thier 16 cylinder generators. Or we could buy a surplus engine and generator from a GP-9 and use that to power the trains Ok, maybe thats overkill, but I could never run that at my house since it only has 200 amp service to begin with. Most typical houses like mine don't have much more than that. But can you imagine what your neighbors would think when you start and run that GP-9 diesl engine, lol.
