You guys were talking about what a nightmare some of the old steamers would be if we were super-detailing them---I came across the following photos the other day and thought that these would have to top my list of detailing nightmares. D&RGW 2-8-8-2s in 1930:

Yeah, that looks like a nightmare of detailing, especially adding that massive tumbleweed on the pilot. I see three compressors--wonder what's on the other side?

    bnsf,
THANKS for the photo of the EM-1 "Yellowstone! Everyone here should already know i'd settle for that!!!! Great Picture. Now if I could only find a color picture of the B&O EM-1, 2-8-8-4, #7600 when it was in its last days pulling a passenger, but sadly everyone I ever seen was black and white! So i'm asking for the impossible! So no one go to the trouble finding one unless you actually have a color picture of it and can scan it because thier isn't a color picture of the EM-1 #7600 online that i've found and believe me I dug deep into sites trying to find one! :D Nothing like that is online to my knowledge at the present time unless like I said someone would have a personal picture of it and could scan it thats all I know of to find one.

I wish I could find a good out shop picture of the #7600 in black and white or even color! I have to agree with Watash! They are the best steam pictures around for looks and for the modeling the loco on them! :D

Now as I think of it, everyone look at that Yellowstone bnsf posted below the Big Boy. That exactly what my models of the EM-1's look like! :D All but one thing though on my #7600, I modeled it to be the last EM-1 to pull passenger consists and sadly I didn't see the fact that in its last days had graphite on the boiler for the passenger runs so its headed back to the drawing board to be made right! :D No big deal to me its the EM-1 of a life time i'm talking about so I don't mind sadly it will be down for awhile but its worth it to make it right! :D

You wanted a shot at the other side? Than you shall have one. By the way the "tumble weed" on the front of the previous photo was actually a Christmas wreath! At least this side is less cluttered than the other side! [IMG] :D

Thanks for putting that Allegheny on, so I didn't have to repeat post again, with a poor shot I have. That's a good one. And thanks for the other side of the 2-8-8-2. Lotsa air tanks. I retract my earlier statement about 3 compressors. Those are probably feedwater pumps ahead of the rear cylinder. By gosh, that IS a Christmas wreath, not a tumbleweed! We really need to change the name of this to Articulated locomotives. Didn't realize those DRGW engines were Alcos.

Thanks miles and miles BNSF!! Did you notice the size of the roller bearings on the side rods? That was one thing that made them run so smoothly without pounding the track at high speed. Its a shame they never used them for what they would actually do.

EM1----You said something about wanting some pictures of 7600 class in either color or with the passenger consist. I don't know if you have already seen these, but I thought they might be close to what you are looking for.

With regard to the flying pumps on the VGN Locomotive, I would bet VGN mounted most of the loco's of this class w/ the pumps up front.

That's NOT to say all loco's were done this way. Within any given type of loco, there can be many classes. As a C&O modeler (which VGN followed many practices) I can say most loco's of a particular class were done in the same way. However, not all locos of a particular TYPE were always done the sameway. Example... some classes of Pacifics had flying pumps while classes of C&O Pacifics didnt.....same for Mikado's, same for most of the other types of loco's the C&O ran.

With the articulated engines however, most were VERY similar in how they were outfitted.

I would recommend you go online, and contact the Norfolk and Western Historical Society. They do have a VIRGINIAN section. I ordered the VIRGINIAN shop manual for painting and lettering the freight cars. It has been most helpful. Maybe they cannot quickly answer the flying pump question on your particular loco... but I bet $10 to a stale donut they know who can.
