Weathering Freight Cars: Chalks and Covered Hoppers - Colonel

This is another thread about weathering freight cars. Colonel created this thread for weathering covered hoppers on his layout. He uses chalks; acrylic paints are not covered in this thread. In 2001, Colonel was just starting to weather his cars, so this thread is a good one for beginners to cover all the basics. Weathering with chalks, as opposed to weathering with paints, is easily reversed if you do not like the results. There are some good pictures in this thread, too.
