Reminds me of my attic space (not as new or nice as this one). Finish work I am learning is neither quick or cheap :). I have taken any before / after pics (should have) but will try to get some pics of the current stage of my attic / train room transformation. I am still on target to start benchwork construction around December 2010.

I still have to have electric ran to the attic (need new panel), HVAC, insulate, finish one kneee wall sheetrock, install carpet squares, and general finishing (paint etc).

Ye, that is a great space for a model railroad.

Keep us posted on or ideas.

^ Not to worry. Structure is sound. Pretty typical construction here in North Carolina, plus its a very steep pitch. My decision now is how "high" I want the ceiling. That is, use it all, or cut it down some for heating and cooling costs. But I like the effect of a high ceiling.

Fiber-optics and that high ceiling - you could do a KILLER nighttime sky for night running... Drop ceiling of some sort painted sky blue for daytime, with fiber embedded from behind for stars.

Actually, I've thought about this, but it is cost prohibitive and beyond my means. HOWEVER, what I have looked at and am reviewing is projecting stars up there from some sort of "gobo" system on theatrical type lighting. The idea of imbedding fiber into that high of a ceiling is more laborious and time consuming than I am willing to put into it.
