This is an old N scale Arnold Rapido USRA Pacific that I attempted to bash into a Southern Pacific P-13. These were the largest 4-6-2s on the SP system and usually ran between El Paso and New Orleans.

Hollywood Backlot Wild West hotel false front

I have been selling off old structures and kits on eBay when they don’t fit in my present N-scale layout under construction. I found pieces of some kits for oldtime buildings, and I couldn’t see selling them incomplete. I have had good luck selling structures that are somewhat unusual and that also appear at least superficially to have above-average detail. I am building some of these as movie lot false front buildings, and this is the first one.

I have read stories about some modelers who staged movie scenes on their layout as an excuse for running an oldtime train on a relatively modern layout. I have always seen these with models of old style buildings. What I have NEVER seen is realistic models of FAKE movie set false fronts, with nothing but scaffolding and framing behind the front.

This is the first of 3 to 7 buildings, an entire movie set “western town.” In general, it is not worth my time to build something detailed to sell, but maybe these will be unusual enough to arouse some interest. They don’t fit my present plans but I have wanted to build this for 30 or 40 years, so this is my chance.

Much finer work than I am capable of doing, and I'd like to be able to be half as good when my DB150 finally emits that strange smoke.

Another oldie from me. A newly shopped UP 2-10-2 backs out onto a parking radial for some final adjustments.

Kenneth, that is a nice job! It reminds me of two things, going to Universal Studios in LA as a kid, and the end of Blazing Saddles where they built the fake town. Good times!

Nicely composed. Almost a post card scene.

Thanks, I took that shot years ago at my favorite outdoor setup location for photo shoots. Alas, it no longer looks like this with a far off horizon and a few trees up close. It has been swallowed by suburbia and full of very expensive homes from the levy on the other side of Bullhead Slough (the water on the far right) toward the treeline on the horizon.
