They ride quite low to the rails. Keeps the center of gravity low

Got back from Kauai on Monday. Went on the Kauai Plantation Railway.....which is really just a tourist trap, but fun nonetheless. And it's the home of the Koloa Rum Co. Yum!

Ironically, the passenger cars are built on flatcars that originated on Oahu. They were sold and sent to Alaska, then sold to the gentleman that decided he wanted a railroad on his plantation on Kauai. 60 years later, and they're almost where they started their life!

Matt- Your photos aren't displaying. They seem to originate from a source requiring log-in. :(

Alex- Nice photos! Do you know where this train originates? I'm guessing a mine out in or around the Powder River coal fields?

Never seen anything like that train in this era. The cars kinda look like the Talgo trains which had a brief appearance on U.S. roads in the '60s (?)

Before the "Cabbage" was added to the end there was the Fins sticking up like on a late 50's Cadillac or like the "Batmobile" so the trains got the Battrain handle

Still it is a bit difficult to get used to seeing that styling. So radically different from Amtrak and even what went before that era.

Boxcab, The train originates at LG&E in Louisville, KY. But it goes to Madisonville, KY to a mine to get loaded. The PAL has numerous of coal mines located on their railroad. They also get alot of NS coal trains they run and gets sent back to Louisville and NS takes them to Brown, KY to a big power plant located just of the CNO&TP

Thanks, Alex. I guess we don't get enough news of the PAL and others in that region, to understand what's happening.
