... well, my little fantasy world had to start somewhere... and who knows what the future may hold?

G'day folks! I've been a longtime modeler in HO scale but have been away for several years (no current layout). Recently I've begun to think about resurrecting my old fantasy, the NXS. Then, when cleaning out a few online pics, I came across these and submit them for comments and hopefully a bit of enjoyment.

All were kitbashed about 9 or 10 years ago from Athearn SDs and assorted parts (Details West, Details Associated, Cannon, etc) and repowered with NWSL motors rolling on NWSL wheelz. None are DCC.

As you can see, there was an attempt to come up with a paint scheme unlike the two... with a bit of CN influence (I just like the way they looked) and a tad of Susie Q thrown in to boot.

As noted above, when these were built, SDs were still fairly popular in the prototype world... but there was movement afoot to extend their lifecycles by shopping wrecks and such... thus, in one pic, you'll notice an extended Spartan cab. Also, I have a real thang for the old Southern/N&W/NS practice of high short hood... long hood forward operation. My extended Spartan cab was an aberration even on my own line!

The herald... a kind of wet noodle NXS was printed onto decal paper with an ink jet printer. The results were fairly satifying... and I'm certain that modern printers, inks and programs for this specific task would make a new set even better!

I've also been playing around a bit with PhotoShop by creating layered images that I can edit relatively quickly to experiment with possible "new" schemes if I decide to continue by decorating current GE power on the line! My NXS line also supported electrification in the form of old Walthers GE electrics based on the old EC 60s, and even after all these years, I'm still trying to justify having a couple of F7s and F9s in this scheme on the property (maybe MOW)! Now, if I just had money and room.

    Thanks for stopping by.

    What I'm noticing is 9761 - a highnose Phase 3 SD40-2.

Not a Ph III SD40-2... IIa or IIb at the latest.

I like the extended cab on the 9261... reminds me of those BN GP50s.

... and just cuz I'm posting again, how 'bout a yard transfer set?

It does have the angled blower duct of a IIIb, which is what I noticed first, but not the Q-fans evn a IIIa has. (I have got my phases right?)

No Q-fans, no exhaust silencer (and the attendant DB fairing mids required on ERDB equipped units), no straight sidesills, etc.

It is possible to replace the blower duct cover though... N&Ws SD50S' were retrofitted with angled blower ducts about a year after delivery. They're the only EMDs to have an angled blower duct and fishbelly sidesills (phasewise, the straight sidesills were introduced before the angled blower duct)

Really cool looking paint scheme! Good work! I like how the high noses look, those are some of my favorite styled locomotives.
