This was in the Reno, NV yard yesterday and do not know what it is/was. I was on the south side of the yard and heard loud screeching on the north side but my view was blocked by freight cars. The sound kept on and appeared to be moving slowly so I drove around to see by by the time I got to a viewing point this "train" had moved to a point I could not get a good shot of it. Went back this morning but it was gone. What is this and what is the purpose? This is the best shot I could get and enhanced it a little to show as much detail as possible.

Thanks in advance for the information, CBG.

I didn't know, but as soon as I heard about the loud screeching, I was ready to guess that.

    Let the sparks fly!

Several years ago I was on business travel in central California and "BREAKING NEWS!" interrupted the evening show I was watching. Chopper 5 (or whatever) was on the scene covering an extensive train fire from above. It was hilarious listening to them make stuff up because they obviously had no clue what they were looking at and were trying to fill dead air. About five minutes into it a viewer called in to tell them about rail grinders, so they relayed that to audience and calmed down. Return to your regularly scheduled programming folks. Nothing to see here. :ROFLMAO:

Thank you. I would have guessed this as well, but never having seen one in action (or even static!) I figured I had no real idea. I'll have to check around the area and see if it is still local and maybe catch it in action.

Looks like something we could use on our models.

That would look great on a layout, modified to be a track cleaner instead of a grinder.

Did not find this anywhere in the Reno area Thursday, however, went to Sacramento on Friday and found it in Roseville. Got a few individual car pics but captured the entire set in pano view. Hard to get closer so shot over the fence. pano.jpg
