Here's one for you guys. What type of operations do you have on your railroad?

    I'll go first...
The BNSF handles all long distance trains which inclued TOFC/COFC, Auto Parts, Coal, Grain(corn and rice), Petro Chemical and Mixed freight traffic. The Aransas Odessa & Western handles all locals and short distance traffic. This includes Grains, Petro-Chemicals and Mixed merchandise picked up locally. Passenger Trains are Amtrak. The BNSF/AOW has Three Passenger trains daily both directions. Number 310/315 is the extension of the Texas Eagle from San Antonio to Corpus Christi. Then we have Number 500/501, The Padree', a mid day SA-CC train. And finally The early morning and late night RoadRunner, Number 504/505. The Eagle is all Superliner equipment and the Padree' and RoadRunner are Amfleet.

    Max,
On my layout(module) I run mainly grain and coal, as well as general merchandise, as the region of NS I model , is usually a terminus for manufactured goods and ships furniture, clay and other aggregates, as well as steel stampings. Greensboro has recently had an Auto rack terminal built offline of course so a need for the Concor model has become necessary (the N scale article is great this month). The grain is usually bound for points east of Gboro, and the coal is also bound south and east towards Wilmington and Raleigh. The Triad area has alot of opportunity to model run throughs as well as unigue locals. As for Passenger, the Carolina Special runs through twice daily, but I am not interested in Passenger operations nearly as much as I am freight. Some many highoods, so little time [IMG] Great question and y'all have a good one, Justin May

well on mine since i model the ns and in the illinois area the ns operates strangely so here goes i put the traind out of the yards and put it in the first siding available until the crew ties up on hours of service and then a relief crew comes out and sits for another 5 hrs. until they can go visit the next siding!!!!!!

not to get off the subject, but did you here about the union pacific trainmaster who committed suicide.... he sat his lawn chair on the main line so a train would hit him and he was found by a train crew five days later dead from starvation..........sounds like it could happen to a ns official also.

ok now for my reply.here on the mighty bn things are running very well. all of the intermodal trains made it across the road with minor delays (we cross the ns twice and had to wait on the dispatcher to answer the radio).and coal is being loaded and dumped at a very fast pace.things might be getting a little too busy on the lines though.we just got calls to handle more traffic due to the ns not being able to handle what they have.someones got to get it there close to on time.guess we will have to look into more dash 9's and sd70mac's.......

I don't know what this has to do with operating N scale layouts but I'm sure enjoying the posts. Seriously though I'd like to operate my layout using a timetable but not really sure how to go about it. My mainline is a dogbone single loop which enters and exits a yard, so how do you timetable the same train that leaves the yard only to return as the same train??????

And do they stand guard over their "thoroughbreds" so no one with red paint can add anything to the nag to make it a stallion?

Due to constant replanning and a strained budget, the Taylor River Division of the BNSF and UP is still operating on a lousy test oval. Construction was originally planned for June of 2000, then July 2000. Now it looks like actual construction could be pused as far away as 2001! [IMG] One of the large factors for the budget strain has been the massive procurment of motive power and rollng stock. 13 locomotives have been added to the roster since late April 2000. and more than 50 cars. Some industries and commerce operations (building kits) have also been secured for the Taylor River Division. To make this long (boring?) novel relate to this topic, currntly I have no real operations. I plan to use Computer Software such as ShipIt! to conrol layout traffic. Of course there will still be just play trains too from time to time. The BNSF will haul coal, grain, wood chips, paper, beer, intermodal and merchandise. The UP will haul coal, grain, intermodal, ore and merchandise.

The Andersley Western N scale Railroad, set in southern California, has four hidden staging tracks for the 50-car or so through trains. These include intermodal, coal and merchandise.

On-line industries are a lumber sawmill and chipping plant, chemicals, food storage and distribution, metal fabrications, cement plant and LPG depot, to provide a good variety of traffic.

There are yards representing Los Angeles area, San Francisco area and the main yard and locomotive shop at Andersley, where most trains are classified for onward movement to LA, SF or elsewhere.

Should make for interesting operations, when time allows it to be done!

Ya, well on the EBCRL they are wishing they had sidings!!!!

    Bacon, you should do UP

The crew gets one mile out of the yard, abcks into the yard, proceeds to fall asleep, 12 hous later the alarm goes off, and the next crew will take the train to the next siding where it will sit for 2 years.

    Happy Railroading!!

why do the up when i can the ns and it is all the same other than the wheat weasels out to fire my crews, especially when they fall asleep. the new corporate vision of the ns is no job is so important, no service is urgent that we cannot sit in the safely for twelve hours while we make overtime and do it SAFELY and EFFICIENTLY. my railroad just hired about 30 more trainmasters too to figure out how a major 10 car derailment happened and also to help rerail everything but, now 10 hours later instead of 10 on the ground the idiots just called hulcher's for the new 50 car derailment they caused. now all the crews just got furlowed and we're bankrupt!
