I was thinking if I do anything. I will run down to Auto Zone and see if they have some window tinting. I don't want the windows blacked out.

It's not 'blacked out'...it's 'limo tint' ! The adults on the party train can see out...the outsiders can't see in. :D:p:whistle:

You will have a subwoofer mounted underneath the scene, booming "party music", right?!

Should I ever allow train sounds emitting from my trains . It would be realistic train sounds. The sound of the engineer dropping the air, squeeky breaks, slack being pulled out or shoved, proper engine noises, correct whistles or horns for the appropriate motive power. None of this rinny-tin tinny stuff I hear running around most layouts. No!! I didn't really say that? Did I? Wow, Rick what a put down, I heard someone out there say. Yes, it is and I agree but this is not pointed at the user's but the manufacturers of such poor sound production. Let's get something that actually sounds real. It doesn't have to ride around in the motor or locomotive. It can come from a Surround Sound System under the table with the full base present. Now that would be some realistic sounds. I appeal to the brainyac's in the business.

lt's all in the size of the speakers. You can't use a 1" Tweeter to produce Base Most Base speakers are 12" or better.

I want it so real that when someone comes in my front door they honestly think a train is coming through the house. Well, momentarily. A moment of panic perhaps. Even I would shut down that kind of noise.:oops::rolleyes:o_O:cool:

Is there room in that car for a low-rpm motor, slowly turning an eccentric weight, to "rock the boat, baby?"

Just "don't tip the boat over!"

JMRI has a Virtual Sound Decoder feature, that includes multi-channel sound capability to follow the locomotive (assuming location detection/ transponding.)

It listens to throttle commands (including sound functions) for given loco(s), and plays sounds accordingly.

Bluetooth transmitter can also send the mixed sound to your favorite bluetooth speakers or bluetooth capable surround sound system. All for the extra cost of four or five DCC sound equipped locomotives.

Interesting discussion with regard to train sounds on our layouts. Viable options.

Pictures, I promised some pictures. I took the pictures, downloaded them and now I can't find them. Isn't that the way.

    Did find this picture.
    Lark 03.jpg
It's my version of the Southern Pacific Lark. What with the sleepers on board. In the background a SP freight making it's way downgrade in the Coal District. Fun it is or was and will be again.

    Then there's this one.
    3window GN RPO Car.jpg
The photo is not mine. The reason it is here look at how much the Orange field of color has faded. Never mind the weathering job someone did on it. Mother nature can do some interesting work.

Still looking. I will be back with the pictures I took of my Great Northern passenger equipment.

I'm glad you all feel at home enough to participate here. It's all good and works for me.

Leave it me to have a perfect day so far. The pictures I took did not turn out.

Here's one that did. Sort of. I had it set on Macro and it must have decided to change it in the automatic feature department.
    DSCF1920.JPG That sucks!
I must be getting rusty. I usually trim off any excess in a picture. Oh well !
It was my intent to show your the color variation between cars. The different shades of Orange and Green. Did I expect there to be a General Standard?

As to sound on the layout. I have a Surround Sound System that will go into the train room. 12" Woofers will be pushing the base. Tweeters the high pitched sounds and 7-8" speakers shoveling out the mid-range. It won't be played loudly but more as background. Unless I want to impress.

Will the sounds be correct for the motors or locomotives running on the layout? As close to the real sounds as I can get.

By the way there are several sound decoders where they went out and recorded the actual sounds of various locomotives/stoves/steamers/kettles AND dieseals/motors. If that didn't work they bought license to some of the copyrighted trains sounds. You can't get any closer to the real deal. Without it sitting in your back yard.

Pictures, photography, good or bad pictures. What a mess. You'll get to see here in a paragraph or two.

First thing I had to change the batteries in the camera. Fairly easy as there are instructions, if you can see them. Okay, that done I realize with the first shot the camera isn't set-up correctly. Fiddle farting around I remember how to set it up. Where did they put Macro. Right where they had it last time. Once reset well, take a look.

To start off this presentation: Here is the Intermountain Great Dome Lounge, a Kato Dome Vista, and a Rivarossi Observation Sleeper/Lounge (Bar). Note the color of the ends of the cars. Does anyone of them look right? DSCF1929 (2).JPG

Next we have a classic example of Flash/Wash-out. Note the Great Dome. Do you see any other problems?
DSCF1933 (2).JPG If that doesn't grab you, your vision is almost as bad as mine. Is there a variation in the shades of GN Orange, Green and Yellow striping. Wondering how I'm going to story my way around this. Oh the sun did it. A storm came up and washed the color off. The shops didn't mix the paint right. Some kid mixed the paint wrong. The paint was water based. Aiiyiiyii !!

    My last shot for now.

This wins the Critical Eye of Rick, Best Picture Award.
Won't this make-up into an interesting passenger train.

By the way the problem of coloring plays out with my Daylight, Union Pacific, Santa Fe, California Zephyr "Streamliners", never mind my "Heavy Weight Pullman" passenger cars.

What does a guy do? Run them any-old-way.

Love Kato but they don't have the variety of cars I want. I want it all. Of course that isn't going to happen.

The following pictures aren't mine. I use these to compare the 1X1 foot scale to my N Scale models. Take a look see.

    Fulldome.jpg
    The Great Dome Lounge.

    GN_EB_Dome Vista's.JPG

The pictures above: Now we have something to compare to.

Did you note the Pennsylvania passenger cars in the background of the first one. During the age of the passenger trains this was a common practice. Run through cars would carry affluent passengers in one car from point of origin to destination. Believe it or not I have a Kato set of four Pennsylvania Sleepers that will serve such purposes.

My question to the Old Hats who remember the Great Northern. Did all the passenger train cars have Empire Builder, imprinted on them?

Tinting, if I tint the windows it would be a barely discernible green tinting.

Did you also note the Green colored ends on the cars.

Thanks for tagging along as we take a look at the Great Northern Passenger Trains.

Back to work. As Uncle Joe on Petticoat Junction used to say and do... it's time to take a nap.

    Later!

I believe that all but baggage/RPO were lettered for the Empire Builder.

Did GN really host run through cars from back East? I thought that was mostly ATSF stuff from Chi-town to LA.

I think you're looking at the PRR coach yard South of Union Station in Chicago.

Also, patience has paid off for me with Kato. Do I have everything I want. NO!! But my wish list is basically down to EB, NCL and TCZ. TCZ would be easy for them at this point. NCL and EB not so much. Anything after that is just gravy.
