Enjoying watching Classic C&NW Volume 1: The Alco Line this morning. Watching these crazy long trains with lots of Alco power is just plain neat. Footage is from sometime in the late 1970's, Summer of 77 I think. I notice there is still alot of 40ft box cars in service, I assume for grain and were phased out soon after by covered hoppers? Or would they be in wood chip service? What about what's in the other larger newer box cars, they seem to be mostly from other roads? Also neat to trains with two or three TOFC's mixed in, where were they going to or coming from I wonder?

As I understand it, there were 40 foot box cars that were indeed left in grain service. The late 70's early eighties seems to be the right time line these got phased out as many small elevators were closed. So I believe you are correct.
