I saw two of these CSX cars today, here's a shot of one of them:

I have my own theories, but would like to hear from someone who "knows" [IMG]

If it is what I think it is......it is a remote control car for switching operations. They are paired with a complete locomotive and allow workers to switch cars from the ground.

    Pat,
I think you're right.... one of my friends e-mailed me some info on them. Apparently, this flat car contains the remote control apparatus, so when connected to ANY loco, the whole string of locos can be controlled "on the ground". I have seen a pair of CSX switchers being controlled "on the ground" by a local switch crew in Charleston, S.C.; it was an interesting sight!

yeah it also explains the headlights, Strobe light, air horns, pilot lol. I think I have seen some with special hand holds to hand onto the car while switching, but that be dangerous if your locomotives got out of control.

Interesting photo and subject. I guess they are going to go to a lot of remote control in yards, etc.
Buy the way, isn't Al Krug's web site one of the good ones? I found that a while back. Lots of good stuff there.

Ed, you're right.,.. That was an interesting story (as well as website)> I guess the MRL units are a little fancier than the CSX units I saw [IMG]
