As I continue looking at modeling in S scale, one problem for me is location. I am situated where it is hundreds of miles to the nearest shop that might even stock a small amount of anything in this size. :(

So I am wondering if anyone can give me some suggestions of shops that have good inventory, perhaps have web sites, or might even have a bit of a price break offered?

LS- The BTSRR link is the type I'm looking for.

There are basically two ways to go. Tinplate/hi-rail. (American Flyer style.)

Or scale. These more closely resemble the prototype RR equipment. It's the latter that I seek.

    Thanks! [IMG]

Mid-late 1960's. Prior to the mega-merger period. Fan of Milwaukee Road, and also the NP. Modeled location for both in the Pacific NW area. This would mean primarily EMD power.

I can't be of any real help then as I model in the 30's and in Sn3. Greg may be able to help you out.

American Models has a selection of engines that step right out of the late fifties and sixties. How does FP-7's a and b's, GP-9/18 and an E-8 sound? For the second generation of EMD power throw in a GP35. For alco's presence AM has FA-2's and FB-2's, RS-3's and PA/B-1's. A Baldwin S-12 for good measure. Then you can go to SHS and get two emd switchers, SW-1 and SW-9. SHS has a F-3 that rivals Athearn's Genesis series engines and will be joined by the F-7 and E-7. What S seems to be lacking is the early GE's like the U25B's and a Baldwin road unit. I think you can do a credible job with those units to select from.

From a running stand point, the AM run as good or better than the Athearns and the SHS F-3 like a Kato.

Need a steam engine for those fan trips? AM has a die cast 4-6-2 that is really sharp. SHS will have a 2-8-0 of B&O heritage that will be out this year. BTS has a 2-8-0 kit of the MA&PA that has received rave reviews.

Hows that for getting started in S?

    Greg-

If I recall correctly, an SW9 is very close to an SW1200? Just a couple of small louvers different on the battery box or some such?

It appears that the SW1 and SW9 may be available in two different road numbers?

Any suggestions of good places to shop via the 'Net? I am far from a hobby shop that even knows what S scale is. It wouldn't be bad to find a place or two that offered a small discount.... :D
