why 8 notches on the throttle

    Regarding the GE units with 16 position throttles. The U-25's had them as did the U-28's including the U-28-CG's that we had. The intermediat steps were excitation only; in other words the amount of current going to the TM's would change but the prime mover RPM's would stay the same. That throttle was a huge piece of metal, at least a foot long, probally more. Don't have a clue why GE did this,I suspose they were trying for better train control. Since they took forever to load up, standard practice seemed to bring it all the way out to run 16 and wait. The U-28 CG's were tried on the Super-C for a while and because they would not load up quickly they came off. They couldn't keep the schedule. Amtrak experienced the same things with the 500's on the San Diego trains and they are gone from there-thank god Andy
