You'd be correct. Seems the roster I looked at had the wrong info.

Santa Fe RSD15 822 heads a freight past the Clovis, NM depot sometime in the mid 1960s. On the right sits motorcar M-190 and observation 3197 waiting a load of parcels from the express cart. (????)

Makes me want to set up a sockpuppet account just so I can like that post a second time!

I didn't know that GP-9s with steam generators didn't have their air tanks on the roof. GP-7s did.

Interesting pic. The 350 class was known to haul The Tulsan, but I don't think that's what that is. It isn't Kansas City Union or Tulsa Union, because both had a concourse over the tracks with lit windows. Besides, that train was only found at Kansas City in broad daylight. I think it isn't the Tulsa Santa Fe station that the road went back to when Tulsa Union Depot closed in '67 because I believe it only ever had two tracks. And I can't imagine an intermediate station on that route having cars sitting that way.

So what and where is it? Train 112 at Dallas or Ft. Worth? Are those two cars Pullmans? Because they look like coaches to me. Amarillo? Lubbock?

That's a particularly neat looking inspection car.

I do not known where that shot was taken. The slide itself was unmarked, so your guess is as good as mine. The cars behind the U-Boat certainly appear to be coaches. The cars on either side are sleepers. Its possible that this might be the Tulsan post September 1968.

Snow scene. Brrr. Winter is coming, too soon. Sad we no longer have opportunities for seeing such engines in those conditions.....

There's something about the Grande's paint scheme that speaks to muscle and purpose. Just so fine.

It's one of those schemes that doesn't have to be overly fancy to still look good.

Beautiful full length dome. I was intrigued and did some research. AT&SF No. 60 was built by Budd in 1954 and was originally No. 506, and was kept for business train use. It was renumbered 60, then again renumbered to BNSF 31 in 1999 and named Bay View. I'm assuming it's still in service.

I'm really enjoying this Slide Box thread. Keep 'em coming Wil!

Right. Only the Santa Fe, Great Northern and Milwaukee had full-length domes, and the Santa Fe had the most at fourteen. Auto Train bought a baker's dozen of them in 1971. Upstairs was part lounge and part coach-like, with the seats angled slightly toward the windows for better viewing. There was a wet bar downstairs, though there was a steward upstairs and a dumbwaiter. Those built for the El Capitan and San Francisco Chief differed a bit. The Texas Chief wound up with three, but I'm not sure which pattern they were. The big difference was a room downstairs for a courier-nurse on the El Cap cars, which wound up on the Chief when the El Cap went Hi-Level, and a crew dorm (making for a smaller downstairs lounge) on the 'Frisco Chief cars.

The 505 is one of five P-S Pleasure Domes built for the Super Chief in 1951, if I remember right. They were all non-revenue space, with rotating seats in the dome, lounges below the dome and in the long end, and a private dining room (the Turquoise Room) in the short end which could be reserved by groups. The Turquoise Room end was always coupled to the kitchen end of the dining car, which is useful information for those who want to model the Super correctly.

I think that may be Ft. Worth.

The 350 class were assigned to various Texas duties in 1967, and operated individually on the Brownwood connection for a short time. That does look like the same umbrella hiding out back.

Thanks for the additional dome history acptulsa!

I rode a summer NYS&W fantrip in the early '80s in a former AT&SF/Auto Train dome car. It appears that the NYS&W bought at least six former AT&SF full length domes from Auto Train, including the 508, 510, 513, 553, 554 and 555. All are gone from the NYS&W roster today.

The fantrip speed was slow, so the batteries failed to fully charge enough to operate the air conditioning and those of us with dome seats gasped for breath in the heat. Nonetheless, it was a memorable ride on a creaky old pre-resuscitated NYS&W (which several years later was surprisingly transformed into a modern route for stack trains)!

506 still does float around the BNSF system on occasion (sometimes with one of the two other domes BNSF owns).

Could very well be! I'll make note of that. And thanks much for the nice info on the domes.
