I am in the process of researching wine racks. I ran across this interesting piece: http://www.decoist.com/2013-05-23/d...-barn-wood-and-railroad-spike-wall-wine-rack/ Of course, it begs the question, where can I get a box of RR spikes and how much would it cost?
Are you going to build one of these? Or would the missus say no to such an idea? I'm not sure how appealing this would be in reality.
You might find enough spikes lying along the old B&M ROW around Lincoln and south down to Plymouth or Ashland....that is if you and Laura are into hiking.
Laua likes the 'interesting' aspect of it and we might do a small area of the larger rack which will cover one wall - with mostly cheap wines. At the moment, (and this could change), the thought is to make the rack from "black plumbers pipe". If this goes well the pipe will be used for supporting the upper two shelves of the future GandG. We will likely be making her daughter a desk out of this and plans include possible kitchen shelves as well. Hiking - while I love it we won't have time to get out to any of the ROW unless you know of some within 45 minutes of Lincoln?
The tracks of the Hobo RR are the northern end of the old B&M branch. So you could hike starting at the southern end of the Hobo tracks. Though you might want to check with a Hobo employee to determine if it would be worth your while. FYI, here's the history of the B&M line from Concord to Lincoln.
Thanks Hank! I will look into it if possible. I have always loved hiking RR tracks. On another, (non-railroad), site folks are suggesting I check scrap metal places and such.
Instead of towel rack think black plumbers pipe: Preliminary test using the bathroom towel rack. If I can do this with the pipe then I'll use that skill to do it with my trains.
