This caboose was scratch built when I was in high school. I built it to run on my Lionel layout behind my Berkshire. I made the shell out of Balsa wood and cut 3x5 index cards into strips to make planks which I glued on one at a time. The Lionel trucks were all I had and I cut couplers out of 1/4" plexiglass. Many moves and years in storage weren't kind to it.

Here the steps have been repaired and the ugly Lionel trucks replaced with scale Arch Bar trucks and a new center sill. Couplers will come next and maybe some new steps.

I've seen worse stuff on the prototype railroads. It's nice that you still have something from childhood. Wish that I had some of my stuff!

    Wow, Thats pretty nice!

The roller bearing trucks were a tad too new...hehe

Looks alot better with the Archbar(Andrews) style trucks. Now you need a small industreal swicther to pull her!

Thanks LVR. I have a GE 70 tonner that looks pretty good hauling it. :D

Here it is with Kadee couplers added. Next some window glass, hand brakes and black paint to touch up the under frame.

This is the caboose that inspired me to scratch build mine. Old NP prototype IIRC.

    Ken,

I believe it was taken near Vancouver Washington, October 1979. Need to dig out my slides from that trip and check for sure.
