It would be more like,"I dug a hole in that hole" lol.
I just wish I had a camera with me all those times,it's a side of railroading that not many ppl get to see,not to mention some of the job sites/locations!

Sten, thanks so much for the explanation. The responsibilities of a Guard are far more than I realized.

As far as your four-car trainset, I see now that what I assumed to be engine air intakes are actually the windows for the upper deck... [IMG]

Hytec, the bridge is THE bridge, or the Sydney Harbor Bridge. Massive bridge and massive approaches. It is the one right next to the famous Sydney Opera House in all the pictures. I think the fascinating part is the construction and how it was done. Completed in 1932, only a few ships today will not pass under it.

[edit] BTW, I don't think I have ever seen freight traffic cross the Sydney Harbor Bridge?

It certainly is, Ken. You take it for granted living in Sydney and seeing it's image in advertising, etc. but you only need to take the effort to walk across it to quickly realise this is no 'little' bridge. Takes about 20-25 mins to stroll length.

Also, it was built from both sides and joined in the middle. It was out about an inch on the initial attempt - not bad for non-laser sighted 1932!

I remember as a kid going up the south pylon and seeing a model railroad located in the visitor's centre but that appears not to be there now.

went into work early to day to watch the political shenanigans of unveiling new trains (and paint schemes) to the media. After the Golden Pheasants left, the rest of us normies could go have a squiz so I took these pics
The first is of the new Hunter Rail cars, these Diesel Multiple Units (DMU's) are for service in the Newcastle district which is 150km's north of Sydney
    [IMG]

the second shot is of the XPT trainset in it's new corporate livery. This train is now 25yrs old (but give it a coat of paint and they'll believe it to be new)

Seeing the G&W family colors has me wondering- Did I hear an announcement in recent months, of an American based company that was selling it's Australian owned assets?

of the 3 US companies to come to Australia, the following has happened

Wisconsin Central - had ownership of Tasmanian railways and ran grain services in NSW on the mainland. When CN took over the company divested most international assets which included Aust and NZ operations (Aust ops sold to Pacific National, NZ bought by Toll Holdings)
Rail America - had ownership of the Victorian Freight network and ventured into NSW, and provided hook and pull for SCT's Melbourne Perth service. had an arguement over ownership of infrastructure, the contract has a grandfather clause, in which the company gets sole rights (over the Victorian broadguage network) which expired, company sold to Pacific National.
Genesse and Wyoming - bought into South Australian Network, then West Australian netowrk in a 50/50 with Wesfarmers and expanded operations in to NSW and is the rail operator on the Alice Springs - Darwin RR. recently sold most of it's operations to Queensland Rail National (QRN) still has some ownership (I think it's the South Australian and WA operations) which is now known as Genesse and Wyoming Australia.

JL-44-JL class locos on a Lachlan Valley Rail Freight intermodal from Newcastle to Sydney approaching Berowra. The JL class are ex-NSWGR 442 class (Alco DL500G).

3801 in its new (actually old) "grey nurse" livery at Sydney Central. The five streamlined 38s were delivered in workshop grey as a wartime economy and weren't painted the more famous green until the late 1940s.

Pacific National 82 class leading a PN coal train from the Blue Mountains to Port Kembla at Sutherland. The 82 class are an EMD JT42C built in Australia by Clyde Engineering.

The other two locos on the same coal train were 81 class. These are an EMD JT26C-2SS also built by Clyde Engineering. 8124 and 11 of its siblings were sold by the State Rail Authority to National Rail in the early 90s, but the entire class is now with Pacific National.

    Cheers
    David
