Well, As the "Worlds Greatest Modeler", never mind what the NMRA says in its letter. I felt I had to set an example and took the plunge to scratch build some trees. I started with 1/4" square balsa for the trunks, 1/16" square balsa and a whisk broom straw for the branches. A small saw, hobby knife, WS earth color, burnt umber and yellow ochre paints.

So far, I've some excellent (even if I do say so my self) tree armatures. I guess I'll whittle and sand the trunks and branches into a round shape. I kind of think square ones are the future of a cloned forest. I went ahead and scrapped the saw along the trunks to create a tree bark effect. They will be from 2.5" to 6.5" in height. The smaller tree will use straw for branches.

Here's some pictures of progress for you to admire. After seeing them please don't be disappointed in your modeling abilities. After all I am the "Worlds Greatest Modeler."

Hummm, I just thought of something. How about I bake the trees. No doubt about it, that's an idea whose time has come. It should give the foliage that nice fall color look, singe the branches to improve their color, and give the forest a nice Smokey aroma.

So far the addition of the foliage using the different glues is being somewhat difficult. I don't know why I listen to others folks advise. After all I'm the "Worlds Greatest Modeler" and don't make mistakes. I guess I'm just being a nice guy, by encouraging the less talented modelers among us. After all, who knows, they may be able to improve. The Cave Men did it. Why ! now, they even go to shrinks and have Mother issues.

Why, does the glue not stick to just the tree and foliage. But to your fingers as well. When nature calls this results in some issues, especially when sticky fingers uses up a whole roll. That gets expensive and unwanted things attach themselves to your lower regions.

Sitting down on stuck up pieces of straw sure gets your attention.

It seems that the Glue manufactures should do something about that. It may be that they are defective, I'm not yet sure. We'll see if a detailed 'Defective Foliage and Glue" warning is to be issued by the "Worlds Greatest Modeler."

    "Nope! not me."

Now I wonder who said that?

    See ya

I'm anxious to see the final product. I was thinking "tall Alabama pines" until I read "give the foliage that nice fall color." Yes, I know the pines also have dead/dying foliage, but it doesn't stay long before falling. Witness all that in my front yard still needing raking.
