BNSF Chairman Matt Rose said the railroad will acquire 30 remote-controlled locomotives foe switch engines. The first two such engines have been tested in the yards at Newton, Kansas and Mandan, North Dakota. Mr. Rose said, "The technology is there, but I just don't 'think' we'll ever go to a totally unmanned system for our locomotives." (Key word here is THINK. That can give him an 'out' later when the road engines are tested later.) Union Pacific spokesman Mark Davis the U.P. is testing the remote-controlled engines in their yards, but hasn't made a final decision to deploy them as yet. Quite an article in the news paper.
