You know the people in the cars behind you hate you because you purposely stopped to watch the train go by. OK, that could be railfan too but, you know...

I guess I didn't know there were any C&NW painted dash 9 units left. I thought they had all been UPed by now. Is that real dirt in that bag?

Yes, freshly dug. I used my wife's flower sifter to get the big stuff out...and it was patched

That's too funny. I've also mailed sifted dirt/ballast to a fellow modeler. It's good to know I'm not alone.

You know you're a model railroader when a good day is seeing a train with three SD40-3s (rebuilt SD40s) leading (that one took five minutes to go by) and later, on the evening commute, you're chatting with the engineer in the control cab in the end car.

That was my day today, and it made me really happy.:D

You know you're a model railroader when your first thoughts while railfanning are of what kinds of rolling stock you need to buy more of.

When driving through the neighborhood or along the highway and spy in a stranger's landscaping or garden a plant that would make a great tree. Following that up with a not-awkwardly as possible asking them if you can have those plants after they die. I found another red sedum owner yesterday along the highway I never noticed before, going to ask today on my way to town.

...you go for a walk with a salt shaker in your pocket. And when you come to a gravel driveway, you take off the lid, dump the dust-free gravel out, and scoop up as much gravel dust as you can.

You are on your way to your club to do some scenicking, when you get pulled over by a police officer and have a hard time explaining that the foliage in the unmarkrd plastic bag is not what he thinks it is.
