Found an old article in RMC about the SW1. 600hp from a 6 cyl 567 engine. Simple to run, operate, perfect for a industrial type customer. Good long run from 1939 with some gaps in the war years. Many may have been resold over the years. Watch for them at grain silos where strings of hoppers are filled.

The frame needs to be that long to fit the trucks & fuel tank underneath. THe little "step" up front is supposed to be a tool box.

    Yes it's a fun project Lajos :)

I have now started on the first customization on the framework from Marklin.

And I have sprayed the first cote off primer on the shell.

Torsja, you may want to strip off that Tamaya primer and use an auto lacquer primer that will etch the metal. Any of the off the shelf brands in the auto section of a hardware store should work fine. I generally use the ones that say "Sandable" on the lable otherwise you have an enamel and that will gum everything up when you try and sand it.

Or use Floquil/Polly Scale Zinc Chromate primer, this works on brass.

Thanks for the tips aboy Primers, but I try this for now with two coats and with Tamyas Spraypaint. If it does not work it's easy to strip it off again. :)

Here is my SW1. I used black auto paint. Two coats and the details aren't filled in. I tried to scratch this paint with a needle and got no markings with light pressure on the needle. I like the color as this was close to the first paint jobs on the original models delivered in 1939. Cheers, Jim CCRR
[IMG] edit: I been asked what paint? I got it at Kragen Auto store. It is Dupli-Color Auto Spray. It is the most expensive 5 oz. spray can they carry. Comes in many colors. Cheers, Jim CCRR

Looks good Jim, have you gone DCC with a decoder in yours or still DC?

Thanks Joe, Still DC. When I get older I will invest in some DCC and join the trainshow guys once in a while. Of course the up coming Northern Division will have easy wiring switch capabilities for those DCC endowed who want to come visiting. Since I'm just a large loop runner I can live with DC. I would probably be all DCC now except I'm an electrical nit wit. Cheers, Jim CCRR/Socalz44

    Tamiya? Floquil?

Since I live in Japan, obviously, Tamiya is easy to find every where.
Since I have very little experiance compaired to the master-builders on this forum... Why the preferences other than Tamiya?

Alex, from Joe's previous post, "primers" are supposed to be unique formulas, usually with different "binders" (chemical reaction to metal or plastic). This is critical for some materials and paint combinations. Not all primers are true primers. They may say "Primer Grey" (the classic color and name) but unless it says "for metal (or plastic) priming" then one must only assume that it is better than regular paints.

My SW-1 is now 95% completed. The test-drive worked okay (on a Marklin speed controller), but perhaps I will change the motor with a 5pole in the future.
The road name is still to be decided.

The Tamiya and Gunze primers are actually very good and they are "hotter" than regular paint. They are on par with Floquil. We all know of Tamiya as a high quality water based acrylic, but they also make some nice sprays that are solvent based.

The Tamiya seems to work just fine so far.

I have now made my choice off probably some Road name that this SW-1 never used. But in my little world almost everything is allowed in that matter. And the name is little ms. "Foxy Lady":)

The model is now 99% finished with decals and sealed with dull coat. The loco is tested and runs okay for now. I guess the next step is to try to weather it a bit.
