Thanks Fred, the rail itself is weathered with a floquil rust paint pen and the track is ballasted in the whole thing is washed with a black wash. Thanks again, Mike
How I have overlooked this thread I dont understand! I just went through the entire process on your layout and WOW! While it was painful looking at a beautiful layout being taken apart, the progress is fantastic! Your modeling looks awesome and the Santa Fe station....excellent! Thats the most realistic 'stucco' I have ever seen. Well done Mike! (Will be checking in regularly from now on. )
Thank You Jerry , and glad to have you following along as well. I do not know why Walthers did the N Scale version in brick and the HO in stucco but all the ones around here are stucco. Thanks , mike
Well the McDonalds and small depot have been removed to make way for the new yard expansion. I also am posting a picture of the re-done existing yard modification. It will all give better operation and scenery possibilities. Thanks , Mike
Thanks Rick , the McD will be relocated and I have another spot for the depot so all is good in the world!! Mike
Well Mike that was kind of shocking for a Saturday nite. But knowing you it will be an improvement. But shocking none the less.
Glen , you have known me for some time , this should not have been shocking! I could have started all over again (and almost did). Thanks Glen , Mike
You have to have a yard. I'm so sorry I don't have one.I thought I would once I got here, but I actually lost space.:tb-hissyfit: Once I sell off some stuff & get some room under the layout, I might get the yard I want. It'll be a while. Looking good Mike.
Thanks Mike , I had considered 2 other options , one was a facia mounted yard about 3 inches lower than track level and the other ws coming off the main inside the mountain and doing a under table yard but it seemed to much work. Thanks and I hope you get some real estate!! Mike
Today I got the Homasote in as well as the stringers tied to the L girders and cut off. I also got some track in place to make sure it will fit in. I am thinking of oil storage tanks on one side or the other in the loop. I was also able to complete video #18. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fc5a_Goo3pc Thanks , Mike
Very nice! New yard / open staging. That seems to be a long backup. While I have successfully backed 20 car trains through a similar situation I did have derailments about 10% to 30% of the time depending on several variables. The most successful were "Fox Valley boxcar unit trains". The worse were mixed consist with lighter cars closer to the locomotive. If the track was dirty and the train jerked it was never pretty. You might want to consider: Putting a crossover between tracks 1 and 2, (counting from closest to the edge back). Train pulls in loco first to track 2 Loco escapes via the crossover and gets to "go home" which might be a great finish for a child - like putting it to bed for the night or getting lunch. The yard loco, (and or or human hand), could then break up the train into smaller lengths and move them to longer tracks while someone is running another train. Just a thought and I could be off.
You now have more room for staging and it looks like it will add to your operations in a positive way. When I am back home I am going to re-work my staging yard as well (you are an inspiration as always).
Once again I enjoyed your video. Like you I build a lot of "grandkid-friendly" operations into my layout.
Thanks for the input Steve . I have been able to back trains up pretty well and will try it out first then we will see. Thanks Steve , Mike
Here is the completed yard and throat. Now another control Panel and I am switching to DPDT momentary switches for turnout control. Thanks , Mike
