Hey guys, I've got to strip an AZL Dash 9 and the 90% alcohol is not cutting it. Has anyone stripped one before? What did you use?

    Thanks.

I think I read in here that lacquer thinner, toluene, acetone, xylene, brake fluid, pine sol and anything else you can imagine will not take off that paint.

    Great to hear... not. :tb-hissyfit:

I tried two of the above before reading this... and not a thing happened.

I guess I'll have to paint over the original paint.

    That or try sand blasting.

Eddie, browse for some older threads, we had that issue a couple of times. I think Tim (HoboTim) had some success after a couple of weeks....

Gerd, It took Tim almost a year to strip the Dash9, and he swore never to strip a AZL again. The two part epoxy paint that AZL uses is almost impossible to strip.

    A Curse Word!!!

That is a major Curse Word in my books!!! Stripping AZL Brass!!!

The only success I had was using a gel I found at the Home Depot for epoxy paints, or something like that. I had to let the shell soak in the gel for a few days then replace it with more gel. Almost every day I would agitate the gel around the shell to ensure full strength would attack the paint.

Now, the Dash 9 I stripped was a black NS. It took about 7-9 months to get about 85% of the paint off. The remaining 15% was easily scraped off due to the fact that the gel made the remaining paint brittle and easy to remove. The only other problem was the hairline details of the doors still have paint in some places. A shape hobby knife blade made this removal possible but had to be done slowly as not to have the blade come out of the groves and scratch the brass.

All in all, it took me about a year to fully strip and then repaint that one "Bad Word" into what it is today!!!! I am just glad John liked it!!!!

    Yikes!

I'll just paint over the original paint. I spray so thin it won't be a big deal.:tb-wink:

I'll bet you could get it at a Home depot or paint distibutor.
