RSD15 now has a patched paint job pending a full repaint. The original paintwork needs to be weathered, as it was an ore hauler!

Interesting how well the Doppler effect comes through in these videos. Have you tried it with two sound equipped engines MU'd?

BN SD24 arrives with freight. No sound in the SD24, but two idling Alcos provide background sound!

It's going to be interesting when everything is sound equipped. The train room will be very noisy!

With the Broadway locomotive, the sound can be gradually reduced by double taps on F8 I think. Helps reduce overall noise from non active locomotives. May be a while before many locomotives can be sound equipped. A bit pricey to do too many too quickly!

I will shortly be discontinuing my http://www.andersleywestern.co.uk website. The link has been removed from my signature.

It is shortly due for renewal and the visitor numbers do not make it worthwhile to continue the domain payments. Most activity now is on forums and other social media, with far more visitors and feedback.

A section of track at the exit of departure siding was causing intermittent derailments (due to a very short section of track), so was lifted and replaced, re-ballasted and the road relaid. Not sure whether to leave the ballast as is, denoting a newly ballasted section of track, or to weather it to match surrounding track.

Such craftsmanship you'll never know it was torn up. Great work.

I'd leave that new ballast. It's a detail too many people overlook.

I agree we rip up track every week here and lay with new ballast I would leave it as it

I'd say leave it as is, it does give it more of a feel of a living thing, in use and with work done

Today the AWR hosted the most unusual visitor so far. A friend's Beyer-Garratt, in for repairs and servicing.

Those steamers always look to me as though someone could not decide what to create....

Garratts were a way to get a big boiler within the load gauge and lots of traction. This particular one was a one-off built by the LNER for banking (pushing) duty on a particularly steep section of line. Several Garratts were built by the LMS for heavy coal trains. Many Garratts were exported to South Africa for use on 3'6" gauge where they did superb service.

The LNER one above was the most powerful steam locomotive to run in the UK.

Isn't there a small gauge Garratt which was imported, (from Australia? NZ?), to be used on one of the rebuilt Welsh narrow gauge operations?
