I started out with a railroad set in 1953. Then Atlas came out with the RS11, first built in 1956. Then Kato came out with the GP38-2, not even offered when PRR existed, but it was only $25......Then MDC came out with its Consolidation, a sweet runner that can be rebuilt into a PRR H3, but they were all gone by the mid-1920's, as were PRR's Moguls. I have about decided to set my railroad in the mid-1920's, but them I'd have to get rid of all those nice Kadee 40 foot steel boxcars. Oh, phooey, I'm just gonna have fun and enjoy life. Phlfft! to the prototype police.
hey, there is still steam running around on the rails today. frisco 1522 typically ran with a diesel in the consist. just keep the train setup like that!!
That's true but as I told the customer who wanted tu pull his CZ wirh the ATSF PAs: Post these rules in your train room: 1) It's my layout and I do what makes me happy. 2) In case of confusion refer to rule #1 please. 3) If still in doubt, the door is right behind you. </font>[/QUOTE]Yep Yep I agree with these ones. I might add another one to this list. 4) It's a hobbie, RELAX.

I fudge my years 3 or 4 in each direction. Like the TV artist Bob Ross used to say, "Do what you want to do in your little world"
I don't know. While on one hand I'll run anything that I like on the other there is something to be said for continuity. Pete has done a great job of holding to one time span in one local. As your eye and mind moves from one image to the next there is "yes this fits", "this all blends together". Did you ever see a picture and know instantly that it was a Norman Rockwell? Did you ever see a photo of a layout and _know_ that it was Petes? Possibly when running these newer engines you could remove the oder equipment though I expect that would not be easy.
I'm still within the steam transition era. That cancels out alot of modern loco's and rolling stock for me. Stay cool and run steam.....
What we're all saying is- if it makes you happy, then do it. Teakettles with SD70m's? Knock yourself out.
Published retirement dates have been known to be, shall we say, skewed to reflect corporate history instead of on-the-road history. While many, even most, dates are correct, there are plenty of documented instances of operations after specified drop-dead dates with given pieces of equipment. for example, Espee's last steam movement was an unofficial move of a 1905-built Mogul on the SF-SJ main six months after the "official" end of steam. In other words, if you are concerned about the Proto Police, have a convincing and believable story of how this situation arose. And make it a long story....you can outlast a Proto Policeperson. (i.e. if you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them.......if you can't baffle them, bore them......).
Nothing like a PRR "Big-Boy" in say, 1962? I do believe something like a Y6b ran through the Altoona yards one time. SD-24s started in 1958. OK, PRR didn't have any--or perhaps one, just for testing. Hmm... Pigheaded executives on the Portsmouth Branch refuse to retire steam until 1966. John Armstrong made it 1971, I think. There could be some big diesel beasties on the layout soon.
why not! I love the chessie system and also like alco centuries, no chance of them in that livery so i run Erie Lackawanna ones! (mind you, how i explain the gm&0 FA's and the csx sd70s is a little harder...) whoppit
Rivet counters beware! I operate the "bloody nose" division, and it has nothing at all to do with Southern Pacific.
I like to run PA-1's and F3's with my Tunnel motors, and Geep 60's in a 1987-cutoff layout... (GP60's were delivered to Rio Grande in '91)
