Location: From Memphis, Tenn. to Jackson, Miss

    Popular Name: CN's Yazoo Sub

Source: DeLorme's Mississippi Atlas and Gazetteer

    Routes: US Hwy 61, 49E and 49; Ms. Hwy 3 and 321

Description of Rail line: This is a great spot to watch and photograph trains going between Memphis and Jackson and Reverse. Some major higways that follow the main line and Ms. Hwy 3 and parallels the Yazoo Sub from Lake Cormorant to Lambert, Ms. And US Hwy. 49E parallels it from Greenwood to Yazoo City, Ms. There are some back roads that you can use follow the line when the major higways get away from it. There is one such road called Money Road (Leflore County Road 518) that runs from Philipp to Greenwood. And there is another back road that runs from Lambert to Mikoma, Ms. called Anderson Road (Ms. Hwy 321). If you do not have a DeLorme's Mississippi Atlas and Gazetteer. That would be very recommendable.

Traffic Density: 40 to 59 trains per day.

Type of Activity: Mainline CN Action in both direction (with some run-thru power, including "Rent-A-Wrecks"). They usually run merchandise, intermodal, grain and coal. Early morning: Southbound Amtrak Train 59 (City Of New Orleans). and in evenings Amtrak 58 Northbound Stops in Greenwood and Yazoo City. There are some run-thru BNSF power that haul grain and/or coal trains as well as UP sometimes. But other than that, the action is all CN. Mornings and Evenings are better for train activity.

CF654, that's good info, thanks. I doubt if I'll be able to join you in the Yazoo District any time soon since we're building a new house about 25 miles north of the Coast, and hope to move in end of May...Rising Water, BOO, HISS! However, I rode 58/59 between NOL and CHI for business back in 1999 and it was a great trip, my wife was with me which made it even more fun.

My first trip on 58/59 was in 1973 when they were routed on the eastern route through Senatobia, etc. That was a kick, negotiating a squeeling right angle turn at 3 AM near some station, Senatobia maybe...dunno???

The only time I've ever seen trains on the Yazoo Sub was in November, 1997 and again on February, 1998. However (along with selling watermelons) I'm getting my driver's licensce Next year and if I get it I may railfan the Yazoo Sub. However, There's some photos that you can see: http://www.railroadforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15654
