Kinda looks like they took the cab off a Conrail unit. I would look at Conrail decals and see if they match
That or look at some of the alphabet sets that are available. Pretty sure a match could be found. Maybe this one in white:

Why would the cab and nose be painted CSX and the hood remain in the old road name of C & O? Why didn't they paint the whole unit CSX? Would it be maybe the cab and nose came off a different unit? Mike
Looking at other photos of it shortly after getting touched-up, they were indeed yellow. How they could fade to near-white so quickly is amazing.mg:
My guess here would be that this unit suffered some sort of damage to the cab. If this happened at a time when CSX was power short, they would have just painted what needed to get it on the road. Sort of like NS running units in primer until they can cycle them to the paint shop. The nose is a different reason. Notice the unit behind it has the same yellow nose style. At one point, CSX went on a safety campaign of trying to get the yellow on the nose and tail of all its units, no matter what paint job they were wearing at the time. As for the fading color of the numbers, that is pretty bad.
Its a bit hard for me to believe that the colors on the numbers faded that bad. I have seen the numbers in yellow also. Then why didnt the yellow on the front fade also?
I have a hard time believing that it is faded yellow.....I honestly think yes it may have been yellow at one point, but CSX had to of applied the "4617" again and applied it in white. Aren't most numbering and letters just a big stick-on decal that is rubbed down real good and then they just peel the paper off? Ive seen this done before
Once again, the yellow on the nose was painted MUCH LATER than the numbers on the cab. 4617 is a famously sought after locomotive on the CSX, it is the last C&O painted unit left (so the dark blue is over 20-30 years old). Pre-chessie... I am doing one also, but intend to have extremely light "buff" decals custom printed. Lou
I stand corrected...I had to go back just about 10 years to find 4617 with its numbers in yellow. That is definately a faded yellow. Wow....and all this time I thought CSX used an odd-ball white. Learn something new everyday.
So.. the cab has been painted CSX blue...and they cut around old faded cab numbers with the new paint ?
A model of this engine #4617 won Second Place, Diesel in the recent NMRA convention in Detroit. There is a picture of the model on page 25 in the September, 2007 Scale Rails magazine. It is an N scale model that won the contest. Does anyone have a picture of the model?
Faded Then why isnt the "C&O" on the body faded to white? Looks white to me. If you look at a number of different photos you will notice different colors of different parts around the cab. note the yellow paint on the nose in each photo. No real fading between pix on nose but letters under window are obviously white on one and yellow on the other.
Frankly, I don't see those side numbers as white at all. They look exactly like the buff color that yellow fades to on CSX equipment. Second, the C&O on the sides was painted - probably using paint - at a completely different time, with some totally different material. There are zillions of CSX loco photos out there and there is nothing out of the ordinary on this unit - it looks like the typical - long overdue for a paint job - pile of junk. BTW, not sure if you follow the 4617, but CSX management is well aware of the paint scheme and has deliberately kept it out of the shop cycles - it is designated to run in this scheme until it fails - then to be donated to a historical society.
Shes still running strong, for a good year or so she spent time on MoW trains around the Huntington, Wv area....but lately i've heard reports of 4617 in Clifton Forge, Va, Selkirk, NY and Wisconsin....all over the place. I would assume she'll be off the roster in 6 months to a year. CSX is going to fill up the 4600 series with new locomotives soon with the 4500's being filled with the SD80's and the SD70M's being moved from 700 series to somewhere in the 4xxx series.
