Word has it that the former NYC/PC/CR Detroit River Tunnel connecting Windsor, Ont with Detroit, Mich that has been under CN control for the last 10 yrs or so will be transferred to the CP in the very near future
Yes it is, but still not big enough to handle all type of doublestacks so the 1st thing the CP plans to do is either enlarge one of the tunnels (there are actually 2 separate tubes) or possibly build a completely new third tube that could handle everything. Stay tuned for further news!
Just a few clarifying notes. Comment was made that CN enlarged one of the DRT Tubes, the north one to be specific. Actually with CN planning the St. Clair bore. CN did not put the money into it. CP paid to have the north tube enlarged, to accomodate larger cars, even though the high cube stacks can not be pushed through. Standard international shipping containers can be stacked as well as auto racks. Hope this clarifies, maybe CP will take over the remainder of the CASO line.....anything is an improvement over CN ------------------ J.E. Concerning the DRT, I thought the CN was incharge of all the work - I don't know who paid the bills, but I could have sworn the CN MofW people were in charge as they did have control of the tunnel by way of the Opr (movement director) Windsor South and CN Dispr in Toronto............ Dave, I don't work for the CN - I'm an NYC-PC-CR yardmaster in Detroit (was a train dispr from 1968 until 1988)
As the track was controlled by CN dispatchers the foreman at the scene would have to be CN as well (I think). CP definatly footed the bill on the expansion regardless of who did the work. Plans/rumors are that the south tube will be done this year, time will tell.
The Detroit River Tunnel is supposed to be conveyed to CP sometime around the 14th of this month. Rumor mill has it that this has to do with CP not raising a stink over the WC transaction regarding CN. CN will still control the CTC until CP sets everything up. At this point only thing that will change at that tube is seeing CP trucks and crews, as upposed to CN.
I sure hope we get a new tunnel. I've been through both(the CN Sarnia, via a 504 re-route with a CN engineer pilot). I don't see how they could make the current tunnels any bigger. The north tube leaks like crazy in some places! I feel if they wanted to expand for 20'2" clearance that CP will have to go new.
Hey Driver8 , I am a Engineer for CN out of Port Huron and I was wondering if you have heard anything about more CP trains running on our lines ? Thanks!!
