All of which leads to the question - do they have, or does one still exist - a real Empire State Express observation car?
NYC never had dome cars. Couldn't fit through the Cold Spring tunnels little north of Croton Harmon. Probably not through the Cleveland tunnel either. Speaking of the Cold Spring tunnels. During WWII, NYC was transporting a 16" barrel from the Watervliet Arsenal north of Albany to Brooklyn Navy Yard . The car carrying the barrel derailed in the southbound tunnel and the barrel went sideways across both tracks, then penetrated the wall and blocked both northbound tracks. The Hudson Division passenger trains had to rerouted over the B&A from Albany to Chatham, then down the Harlem Division to Mott Haven yard in the Bronx and into GCT. I assume the freights went down the West Shore to Hoboken, then across the Hudson by NYC's car ferries. Living in Bedford Hills on the Harlem Division, it was a thrill to see the Central's name trains come through including the Century, Empire State, Commodore Vanderbilt, etc. Looking back, it must have been a royal headache for the Harlem's dispatchers. Not only was the Harlem single-track between Millerton and Chatham, but they also had all the wartime commuters between Brewster and GCT. Sorry to sidetrack this topic. I have no problem if it is moved to another forum.
