I am looking for a couple of Gunderson Single Unit cars. I know that Alan Curtis makes them as a kit, but I do not have the skills (or eyes) to assemble, paint, and decal them. Does anyone else make these units assembled? I only need 2 or 3 of them, and would like to make sure that they can be converted to MTs. Looking for SP, UP, or TTX. Thanks Jim
MDC Roundhouse does. They are very, very light, but nicely detailed. They are a little tricky to convert to MicroTrains if you deem that neccessary, but it is possible and not too difficult. There is actually a couple different options to do this. nscalesupply.com had a few on sale for 6-7 bucks each, in CSX and SP; I checked a couple days ago. Fine N Scale also makes them, but I believe that is also a kit. MDC ROundhouse is your best bet, but with Horizon purchasing them, I would get them pretty soon. Maybe they will be re-released soon.
Con-cor also makes a Gunderson prototype stand alone well car. But not the road names you are looking for. While C-C usually has no compunction about painting any road name on their products it appears that they are only putting correct schemes on this car. I don't think you are going to find any with UP, I don't believe UP has any. I have not even seen any SP well cars inherited by UP restenciled as UP, they are all either still lettered SP or have been sold to other companys. If you're just looking for stand alone well cars and not specificly Gunderson prototype, Walthers has made a Thrall style. The last run was a while ago but you might be able to still find these somewhere.
