I am posting in here 'cause I think that what I am asking is related to "narrow gauge" in one way or another. Is HOn3, HO scaled bodies that run on N scale track? Or is the n3 bit a different track gauge....? I ask because I have just been looking at a bit of it.... Cheers Bruce [ 25. May 2004, 14:35: Message edited by: racedirector ]
Ah, thanks Jim. I get confused with all these additional "n"'s..... with that said, how popular is HOn3? What advantages, space wise, does it have over standard HO....?
Bruce- HOn30 indicates 30 inches between the rails. (Often incorrectly noted as "HOn2.5" by some stubborn magazine publishers. HOn30 is what those who are actually active in the scale call it.) They use some HO bodies on N scale chassis, some N track, etc. (There is also track and rolling stock made specifically for HOn30.) It's the way many people model the Maine two foot gauge prototype. Although there are a few purists who scratch build and hand lay to an exact measurement for their two footing. HOn30 is quite fascinating. Has been most notably done by Bob Hayden and Dave Frary. HOn3 indicates 3 feet. 36 inches between the rails. Is done most often by those modeling the Colorado narrow gauge (D&RGW) prototypes. Yes. There are other 3 footers such as the EBT also modeled. A lot of the motive power here is brass D&RGW steam. Costs a fair amount...... Boxcab E50 [ 25. May 2004, 21:50: Message edited by: BoxcabE50 ]
Just remember, "HO" or "O" or "N" are the scales that are modeled. The small "n" means it is narrow guage. The number after the "n" is the width between the rails. Therefore, HOn3 is HO scale, narrow guage, 3 foot. On30 is O scale, narrow guage, 30 inches.
So, my new 'HoN2 1/2' is a HoN3? Are they the same. Ran it tonight on the clubs N Scale Layout... I had numerous people dribbling over it, including myself. Rolling stock for this scale, where do I find it?
No. HOn2&1/2 and HOn3 are not the same. HOn2&1/2 is commonly known as HOn30 these days. The "30" refers to 30 inches gauge. HOn3 is commonly used to model the Colorado narrow gauges, East Broad Top and others that were prototypically 36 inches gauge. Many of those who model in HOn30 emulate the Maine Two Footers. Even though the track gauge used is the same as N scale, and it's wider than 24 inches of the prototype. There is quite a bit available! Check the suggested link: http://www.hon30.org/ Boxcab E50
