So, I have a bunch of Postwar Lionel HO trains and cars. I’d like to use them on a DCC layout, but I am told the bulbs will burn out if I do. Is there any known workaround or fix for this?

    Thanks, Tom H.

    Hi Tom,

I would not recommend putting the locos on DCC unless you have decoders installed.

    good luck!

That's the first thing I thought too ! Maybe he means that it's a given he'll digitize them and is just worried about the existing bulb v DCC ..... I'd hope !

I wonder if older equipment can safely handle DCC....

Yes it is doable. I put a Digitrax decoder in an early fifties American Flyer HO Hudson. I only run it at my club. (home layout is N gauge). It runs well with a DZ123 decoder and has pulled 40 cars around the layout, but the decoder does get somewhat warm and will shut down the loco if it runs too long with a heavy load. Probably would run forever if I remotored it.

I was kind of thinking along these same lines.
