Dear All Can I ask what other folks have done about modelling the 1938-era 20th Century Ltd.? I have a stack of lightweight Rivarossi passenger cars which I know are not very accurate, but outside of great expense on brass cars, there don't seem to be too many other options out there. Rapido do the "..County" 6-4-6 sleeper Walthers do the "..Imperial" 4-4-2 sleeper ; RPO ; and "Cascade..." 10-5 sleeper No-one does the tail end car (Concor at least seems more accurate in general shape than the Rivarossi/AHM/IHC offering). As far as I know there are no accurate models of the - 1938 - 4068E - 17 ROOMETTE - "CITY" 1938 - 4072A - 10-5 "CASCADE" 1938 - 7405 - DINER/KITCHEN 1938 - 4076 - CLUB-LOUNGE-DORM "CENTURY" Anyone have any experience in 'creating' an accurate consist for this train? Thanks Andrew
Mmm just come across the forthcoming MTH train sets for 1938 and 1940. They look good, anyone have any views on MTH passenger cars? Andrew
Andrew, as a non-modeler I am not much help. I know Mike Kmetz models the Central in N, but he may have some insight as to availability of HO cars. I would check the two Yahoo Groups which are New York Central themed. One is almost all modeling. :tb-biggrin:
Andrew - Rapido makes beautiful cars in both N and HO scales. Unfortunately they are Canadian prototypes - at least so far. Their 6-4-6 would not be appropriate for a NYC train. Walthers has recently been releasing NYC cars which are exact for the 20th Century Limited, but they are for the 1948 version. Still, some of these may be usable if you are willing to repaint. If you like building up or modifying cars to get exact prototypes, there are brass and plastic car sides available that can be fitted to existing cars or core kits. It may be the only way to get some of the cars like the lounges. Here are some discussion groups with which I am familiar. You are likely to get the best answers to your questions here: NYC-Railroad: http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/NYC-Railroad/ Modellers with an interest in the NYC family of railways are welcome NYC-RR: http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/NYC-RR/ Our focus is primarily historical, and mostly limited to the NYC (and PC successor) period prior to ConRail. Our emphasis is upon the prototype equipment, routes, signaling, towers and operations. newyorkcentralsystem: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/newyorkcentralsystem/ This is a place to share information on the New York Central System. Our primary focus is on the postwar history of the New York Central's Great Steel Fleet of luxury intercity passenger trains, including the 20th Century Limited. PassengerCarList: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PassengerCarList/ This forum is devoted to railroad and railway passenger cars - past, current and future. Modeling and prototype discussions are welcome! NYC-Modeler: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NYC-Modeler/ a place to discuss modeling the New York Central Railroad. Modelers with an interest in modeling NYC family of railways are welcome. Don't go away - we still want to continue discussing your interests in the New York Central here, too. Best regards, Mike Kmetz
The 20th Century in HO scale Hi again Mike and Fitz (you two are obviously very active members! I am thankful for such posters!) I'm checking out those other fora, but will keep checking this foruim and posting. I've taken the plunge and will be getting a set of 1938 and 1940 MTH passenger cars when they come out in May. So am selling my existing Rivarossi rolling stock on eBay to help fund this. Best wishes Andrew
