    The LIRR MP-54 Project:

This is my first attempt at building a kit in N Scale. The prototype was used on the long gone Whitestone Branch of the Long Island Railroad, a portion of which I will be modeling. Paint scheme will be PRR Tuscan Red with black roof and chassis. They were run as motorized coaches after electrification of the branch. I plan to scratch build the roof mounted headlight and marker lights, to represent the motorized version, prior to painting.

    QUESTIONS:

What type/size mounting screw and pin vice drill bit/s would one use to mount the trucks? See photo for close-up of attach points.

Would I use a 00-90 with a #62 drill bit such as are used for Micro Train body mount couplers or something else? The kit manufacturer recommended a #1 screw, but what does that translate to in the screw selection found in the Walther’s catalogue?

I assume a larger hole would be required in the truck to allow the truck to pivot freely. How much wider should I go with that one?

    Thanks for Looking!

Well let me start off with I've never mounted to the type of spot your attempting. But your idea; "Would I use a 00-90 with a #62 drill bit such as are used for Micro Train body mount couplers." Sounds quite logical to me. And if you already have that size screws then I would give that a try if no other suggestion arise.
As long as it still permits the truck assembly free movement than your good to go.
If it does not then I would consult my LHS and see if I can find a screw with a shaft near the screw head and the threads further down the screw. Which would afford you both connection and movement of the truck.
Hope that helps or at least spurs other ideas.

Thank you, subwayaz. I already have spare 00-90s but I hadn't thought about needing a smooth shaft near the screw head.

Your welcome Also with that thought in mind; you could just tap out the hole in the Truck assembly slightly larger and that would eliminate the need for a smooth shaft.

00-90 would be far too small for the application. The #1 mentioned would most likely be a 1-72 which uses a 1/16" hole, I think. Have a search for screw sizes and you should be able to work out the screw and drill size required.

Thanks for the info on the #1 screw, Gary.
Good idea to enlarge the hole in the truck assembly, subwayaz. I was beginning to relize that would need to be done, whether using a screw or a bolster pin.
