One of the folks over in the N scale forum suggested I post some pics of my 1931-33 Lionel 400e set. This was my grandfather's - got it about 1940 in trade, when a customer couldn't pay for a carpentry job. There were actually two trains in this set - my uncle has the other (survived a house fire). I had the loco & tender repainted by a gentleman in CT several years ago. I know, hurts the value - but I'll never sell this! I run this around the tree at Christmas every year. The station is also vintage 1930's, got it around 1986 at a long gone train shop here in Western New York. Some of the Barclay figures are vintage, others are repros from Ebay. Yes, that's Santa heading down the chimney of the station.
Wow. That looks beautiful! Extraordinary condition. Did the people come with that set? The lamps and clock, are those also Lionel accessories? Boxcab E50
Thanks! The clock and lampposts are current reproductions. I don't believe the set came with any people, but most of the ones I've added were produced in the same time period.
Wow, that's a real treasure. I remember seeing more of them when I was a kid in the 1940's and probably few have survived. It must look great running around the Christmas tree. :tb-biggrin:
I'd just love to hear the sounds of old tinplate, and smell the ozone those motors would emit. Boxcab E50
1976mgb (and I'm guessing you own one), is that three-rail? I remember having some cars that would go with this as a kid, someone gave them to me, but no loco. I had track too, and as I recall it was three rail. At my advanced age I may be wrong. :tb-confused:
Yep, 3 rail. I have hundreds of pieces up in my attic. One day my kids can decide what to do with all of it. And the ozone smell is awesome!
