I am finally making a little progress on the new layout, and have uploaded the start of the changed website. Not much up at present, but I intend making regular updates of progress. Here is the trackplan.
It saddenm e to see that you have gone to the other side , the design looks like you are in for a great deal of switching action. Look forward to seeing pics of the layout.
"It saddens me to see that you have gone to the other side" Yeah, I know, Paul, but I had a hankering to have something completely different from the 'day job' "the design looks like you are in for a great deal of switching action. Look forward to seeing pics of the layout" Yep, definitely lots of switching, which is my main interest
Where does the line at bottom left head off to? Future extension? Once round the garden? Looking good.
You should have fun with that one! Also looks like you will have space for scenery and buildings too.
I was wondering the same for the track at top right? Or does that lead terminate at the edge of benchwork? Boxcab E50
Well spotted, I just had that down as a switch lead. Wonder if some carefully placed holes are going to appear in the walls at those points...
The one at bottom left is just hinting at a branch line going off somewhere I will try to hide it with a building and foliage, and will probably use it to park a locomotive during switching operations. The one at top right was the main line on the plan I sort of copied, but on mine it is the switching lead for the industry tracks and the run-round. The one where I have marked a possible lift-out continuous run now becomes the through track, but as can be seen it only connects to one of the main run-round tracks. The layout will mainly be run as an out and back from the staging tracks. But we all like to just watch trains running sometimes, right? (Holes in walls does seem an attractive proposition, though)
The bottom left would be a good location if you wanted an out-of-town industry as well, a mine, or quarry, that sort of thing. I love the plan, lots of opportunities for adding things to the operation.
My wife thinks I should go through the wall and run a track along the garden fence, so a branch to an industry is a possibility
Good luck on that hole in a wall. The last time I proposed such a plan, a tunnel through Mount Laundry Room, the opposition group, (my wife), shut down any expansion ideas. Boxcab E50
Dad-blamed NIMBYs are everywhere!!!!! Nice trackplan, Alan- what are you using for motive power? [ 14. October 2004, 17:37: Message edited by: friscobob ]
Alan.... You've got a psuedo inglenook in the center top of the layout.... If you swapped the position of the first 2 turnouts in that section you wouldnt need to use the mainline as the lead...you could us the trailing . Not a major disruption to your operations either, and you could still run passenger services into that platform while switching in the inglenook sidings. Just a thought....
If you check the plan again, you will see that I have added a missing industry! So this track will not be used as a switching lead (unless it is empty!) I will mainly be running only one locomotive at a time, so fouling the main is not a problem
Alan, I like your choice of motive power. The layout calls out for small diesels like the 70-tonner and Alco switcher (my personal choices for industrial switching). That Spectrum Russian ain't too shabby, either. Any idea as to what shippers you will be serving on the new AW?
A few minutes ago the postman delivered my latest acquisition - a Spectrum Baldwin 4-6-0. It is absolutely beautiful It is sure to be my favourite locomotive (assuming it runs well). Perfect size for my layout. Will photograph it today. Not sure on the shippers yet Bob. I am open to suggestions for a smallish town in Maryland or thereabouts. I need some manufacturing factories and something agricultural, probably shipping and receiving. Anything to generate lots of lovely switching
Here is the little beauty Aint she cute? I will just reletter for AWRR and very lightly weather. May change the couplers to Kadee #58 for a more scale appearance, especially on the front. She runs as good as she looks
