NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY/AP) - Passenger rail service from Norfolk to Richmond is slated to arrive 10 months ahead of schedule.
Amtrak service is slated to begin on Dec. 31, 2012.
By train, a trip to Richmond from Norfolk is two hours. Many people WAVY.com spoke with are on board with the plan.
"I'd take it to points beyond. Looking forward to it," one man said.
Rail and Transportation Director Thelma Drake expects Amtrak will run one train a day.
"It will start from Norfolk at 5 a.m. through Richmond [and] all the way up the route to DC, into New York City, as far north as Boston. We don't have the fares yet. Amtrak continues to work on that," Drake said.
A platform is already under construction and soon a station will go up next to the tracks near Norfolk's Harbor Park, bringing jobs to the area. Drake said the train is called Amtrak Virginia.
Nathaniel Staten figures he'll take a ride.
"I would because I never rode a train before like that. Like an Amtrak. I'd take my family on a trip," Staten said.
The round-trip train will bring intercity passenger rail service to Norfolk for the first time since 1977.
The new route is expected to reduce congestion on traffic-filled interstates.
