I am planning on doing a bit of scenery building for test purposes, and not wanting to drop the big bucks for the Woodland Scenics line of products (which I have nothing against, just too cheap to spend the money), I was wondering if anyone has any experience with Paper Mache or something similar for covering foam and getting ready to paint a bit.

I just want to work in a small area on my layout at present because I am sort of trying some things out, a learning experience.

    Thanks in advance.

One negative about paper mache is that it is edible to certain creatures. Some folks have had problems with that.

What Russell notes is quite true. It's a reason many have gotten away from using that technique.

You might try checking a building supply for a product named "Hydrocal." A strong and light weight plaster, you can buy it in a larger quantity. Also, the price is much, much cheaper than pre-packaged stuff at a hobby shop.

I have used plain plaster of Paris over foam with good results. Hydrocal is good also if you can find it at your lumber supply.

Just wonder if Sculptamold is safe from this? It is sort of like paper mache, that's why I asked.

No problems with SCULPTAMOLD and insects. Good to use with foam board. Try and get HYDROCAL if you can. Dries HARD and won't crack. Try your local DRYWALL SUPPLY company for it.

There is always the old hard shell made of paper towels dipped in plaster. It's basically paper mache only with plaster instead of flour.

Mix some latex paint in with the Sculptamold. (I use a brownish earthy color)
    Don't think they'll eat it anymore.:tb-smile:

Thats a brilliant idea. It may even be possible to do paper mache with paint in it.

    Russell-

Thanks for the picture. I thought those critters were all over my basement because I was not showering enough. Thank you.
